The principles of this statement were approved by the General Assembly of Occupy Vancouver – Monday October 25, 2011 on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Occupy Vancouver is a global movement of political expression. We know that civic participation in democracy is one of a citizen’s highest callings.

We know that quashing this movement by forcibly evicting Canadian citizens from the public land of the Vancouver Art Gallery would be a violation of Canadian and International law, including the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

On the eve of the G20 Leaders Summit in France, occupy movements around the world are rallying to demand that G20 leaders immediately impose a 1% tax on all financial transactions and currency trades. This has been dubbed the "Robin Hood Tax."
二十國集團即將喺法國舉行領袖峰會。全球各地嘅佔領運動喺伊個時候舉辦今次遊行，目的係要求二十國集團所有成員國馬上對所有交易所得及貨幣兌換徵收百分之一嘅稅金。我地稱伊種稅為“羅賓漢稅”。

The Robin Hood Tax is a variation of the “Tobin Tax”, named after Nobel Laureate economist James Tobin. Following the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, Tobin advocated for a 0.5% tax on foreign exchange transactions to dissuade currency speculation and capital flight. The sudden withdrawing of capital from markets can cause countries to drastically increase interest rates which is often disastrous for a country's economy.
“羅賓漢稅”係以“陶邊稅”為藍本發展出來嘅一種稅。一九九七年亞洲金融風暴之後，一九八一年諾貝爾經濟學獎得主詹士•陶邊(James Tobin)主張：通過對所有貨幣兌換徵收百分之零點五嘅稅，來阻止貨幣炒賣同埋游資湧動。游資一旦大量從市場撤走，將會導致各國利率飆昇，對經濟造成沈重嘅打擊。

The very speculators responsible for destroying our jobs and savings are reaping historic profits while governments slash our social safety nets. In Canada, the Harper Government's austerity measures threaten to plunge our economy into another recession, according to Sherry Cooper, Chief Economist at BMO. The sentiment is echoed by Ed Clark, CEO of TD Bank who has recently supported the occupation movement.

The Robin Hood Tax has been specifically endorsed by Doctors Without Borders, President Sarkozy of France and Chancellor Merkel of Germany, economist and Nobel prize winners Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman, and even the Pope Benedict XVI.

Saturday's rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery will feature educational speeches, including an address by Toby Sanger, Senior Economist for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and author for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA).

Unceded Coast Salish Territory, October 28, 2011 – The General Assembly, the body that speaks on behalf of Occupy Vancouver, has designated that Sunday, October 30, be Family Day at the Vancouver Art Gallery grounds.

The protest at the Vancouver Art Gallery already features a “Kidzone”, located in the North West area (to the right of the stage, under the tree). However, preparations will be made for the entire camp to be entirely kid and family friendly. The day will feature unicyclists, clowns, hoola-hoopers, sparklers, face-painting, and puppet-making.

The Occupy Vancouver movement announced that it will be hosting a rally and march on Saturday to bring attention to the city’s social housing problems.

Occupy Vancouver has been partnering with non-profits and community organizations to host a number of speakers and discussions on housing. In addition, the Occupy Vancouver General Assembly will be advocating for a number of practical solutions to immediately address the current housing crisis.

The City of Vancouver has said they will have BC Housing on site to ensure that all homeless occupiers receive proper housing – housing Occupy Vancouver says is provided by displacing people who are already on a waiting list for housing.

“Many Occupiers have no interest in moving into the squalid conditions of the city’s social housing units,” says Hamilton-Smith, “especially if it means displacing the thousands currently on the waiting list.”
