Allegedly, it's a "harmonized" sales tax but it does, indeed, feel like a tax on top of a tax...
Here's how it works:
Say your cup of joe is $2. They add the 5% GST to that amount. Sub-total: $2.10. Then, on that sub-total, the provincial government charges 9.5% PST. Result: a $2 cup of joe costs you $2.30 (plus a quarter for tips).
My last translation bill for a client was about $4,880, of which roughly $670 was tax.
It's just insane.
Whats so insane about it?
Who is supposed to pay for your cheap university fees, your cheap day care, etc etc, and all the other social programs not to mention things like the language police ???
