Board index Vancouver Forum

Vancouver forum is an open forum which daily sketches the diversity and the commonality of Vancouverites. It is also an online community where you can discover and discuss various aspects of life in Vancouver and the world at large. If you are a visitor or a soon-to-be resident of Vancouver, or simply have an interest in it, you are more than welcome to join the group of Vancouver Forum posters, but know that any questions you may have about the city and its neighborhoods, the quality of life and lifestyle, are likely going to be met with a barrage of insults by some our resident comedians.

If you are a Vancouverite who just stumbled upon these pages, you'd best get the hell out of here before anyone sees you, but if you do decide to join in, for God's sake don't tell them your ethnicity or you may never hear the end of it! Do not be surprised by uncensored and sometimes blatantly stupid, crazy, remarks that shouldn't ever be spoken in private, let alone on a public forum. If that still hasn't deterred you, then you probably have a thick enough skin and a good enough sense of humour to handle this place. Good luck. You're going to need it!

Blurt wrote:Yeah, the federal and provincial taxmen have a weird thing going on here.

Allegedly, it's a "harmonized" sales tax but it does, indeed, feel like a tax on top of a tax...

Here's how it works:

Say your cup of joe is $2. They add the 5% GST to that amount. Sub-total: $2.10. Then, on that sub-total, the provincial government charges 9.5% PST. Result: a $2 cup of joe costs you $2.30 (plus a quarter for tips).

My last translation bill for a client was about $4,880, of which roughly $670 was tax.

It's just insane.

Whats so insane about it?
Who is supposed to pay for your cheap university fees, your cheap day care, etc etc, and all the other social programs not to mention things like the language police ???

Very well worded post, EU.

As a French-Canadian living half the year in BC and the other half in Alberta, and of the three million Westerners I've met in the last 25 years, I've never met one, not even one who thought they were superior to ANYONE in Quebec... Nobody has ever asked me to get lost and all treated me as a Canadian... regardless of which province I was born in, my mother tongue or my French accent.

Must be just a few insecure Anglo-Canadian dolts posting on obscure forums... the only place they can voice their derisive opinions without being snubbed for their ignorance.

The same hatred you have for lots of Canadians, you Quebec separatist.

I like Quebec in the main but dislike its whiny me me me'isms at the expense of the rest of Canada. The belief that they are separate and distinct from us all. That they demand especial treatment so they wont leave the Union. And above all, the monstrous expenses on the French language when its not necessary.

The majority of Quebecers aren't like that.

You don't even like the Canadian flag.

It's not a belief Dumbo.

Ever wonder why the rules of the Monopoly game you play at McDonald's don't apply in Quebec?

Once North America has conformed to the same Rule of Law that exists in Quebec, then Canada and the US will have joined the rest of the world... mostly.

It looks like Canadian Common Law is a dinosaur surviving only in ex-British colonies. Civil Law, as in Quebec, is globally accepted as "THE Rule of Law".

No, not many celebrated at all.
Actually it was Moving day in Quebec on Jul 1 so most spent the day moving. (there is some bylaw about their moving issues).

Not as fervently as the rest of Canada, but there are many (French-Canadian) federalists (as opposed to separatists) who raise the red maple leaf on July 1st.

There may be more federalists celebrating if it were not for Moving day in Quebec.

There were thousands of Quebecers waving thousands of Canadian flags.

You don't think they're decent because they're not clapping their hands at that moment of time for some roller skater? Yeesh.

Here, they speak for themselves.

(You might try visiting the province at least once in your life, boy... it might help you get an idea of what it means to be Canadian because, clearly, you have no clue... boy.)

Oh, and just FYI (and to help push your IQ a smidgen above Gordy's), Montreal is a city in the province of Quebec.
