Nurse layoffs at Fraser Valley long-term-care facilities

Unread post by tess »

Reducing the number of registered nurses in Fraser Valley long-term care facilities will result in more deaths and sicker seniors, nurses say.

“It’s a disgrace,” B.C. Nurses’ Union president Debra McPherson said at a meeting of Fraser Valley long-term care nurses in Surrey Wednesday.

“Our seniors deserve better care.” McPherson and three nurses who work in Fraser Valley long-term care facilities told media that more than 80 RNs have been laid off in facilities from Chilliwack to White Rock.

The layoffs are part of a five-year Fraser Health plan to standardize care for residents in long-term care to 3.36 hours a day.

However McPherson said that because of the cuts, only 20 per cent of that care will be provided by professionals, or 40 minutes per day.

Renee Kennedy, a nurse at Peace Arch Hospital, said that since January, 10 RNs have been laid off and replaced with licensed practical nurses and nurse aides.

“It’s overwhelming,” Kennedy said. “It’s just a very frightening situation.”

That is terrible. But the City seems to be able to find 3.5 million dollars to spend on yet another bike lane for Hornby Street...

I only know of one way to avoid getting old, and it's not that attractive. Thank god at least I can be immature.

My mom was laid off as well

First they reduced her and a bunch of other RNs hours and hired more care aids which resulted in 4-6 more extra deaths per month and then they gave her the pink slip

She quit though and lucky for her found a job right away

who gives a fuck, those nurses will have new jobs in a week. BC sucks, have any of you discovered that now. I dont meet the lanscape or the weather, I mean the fuckwads that run this province and spend most of their time padding their own pockets, giving tax breaks to corperations and trying to boot as many people off welfare, disability and out of senior care facilities as possible.

not to mention closing jails, laying off 50 judges, more prov prosecutors and other staff at a time when court wait times are over a year long minimum
