Vancouver forum is an open forum which daily sketches the diversity and the commonality of Vancouverites. It is also an online community where you can discover and discuss various aspects of life in Vancouver and the world at large. If you are a visitor or a soon-to-be resident of Vancouver, or simply have an interest in it, you are more than welcome to join the group of Vancouver Forum posters, but know that any questions you may have about the city and its neighborhoods, the quality of life and lifestyle, are likely going to be met with a barrage of insults by some our resident comedians.

If you are a Vancouverite who just stumbled upon these pages, you'd best get the hell out of here before anyone sees you, but if you do decide to join in, for God's sake don't tell them your ethnicity or you may never hear the end of it! Do not be surprised by uncensored and sometimes blatantly stupid, crazy, remarks that shouldn't ever be spoken in private, let alone on a public forum. If that still hasn't deterred you, then you probably have a thick enough skin and a good enough sense of humour to handle this place. Good luck. You're going to need it!

GREAT ! Anyone can have a gun.

Unread postby mimi » 16 May 2012, 06:33

All we need is a little common sense.

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ - We are scared for Steven Hopler.

On Friday, Judge Thomas Manahan ruled that the blind gun enthusiast may keep the six handguns he still has in his home, but he must store them in a safe pending an evaluation of his alcohol use.

Four years back, Hopler accidentally shot himself in the shin while cleaning one of his guns, according to nj.com. Police say that while he was in hospital, a tenant in the two-family home broke into his apartment with some accomplices and stole 12 handguns and two shotguns.

Police recovered eight guns but kept them “for safekeeping following him shooting himself. Now, they are being held because we are seeking their forfeiture,” Jeffrey Paul, a spokesman for Morris County prosecutor Robert Bianchi, told the site.

A prosecutor's office had asked a judge to revoke Hopler's gun permit and seize all guns in his possession arguing that he was a drunk and posed a danger to others, the news site says.

Judge Manahan ordered Hopler, 47, to complete a course dealing with the maintenance and care of weapons.

True. A drunk does not need to play with guns. But then again they have done more damage with cars when drunk. I guess alcohol is a worse legal drug than a certain other illegal drug.

I guess the big question is if you're going to draw a line on who can have guns, how do you determine where to draw it? There are lots of alcoholics and druggies who have guns and we don't take them away. If the issue is that this guy is blind, it would make more sense to me to prohibit him from obtaining ammo.

I'm not very good at determining exactly where lines should be drawn....but I'd start with blind people who shoot themselves in the shin.

:D Point taken! I guess I'm just thinking that if we walk in and start taking people's personal property away even if they haven't committed a crime with it, we're treading on thin ice. I agree that the possibility of further injury to himself or others is huge, but as kiebers pointed out, people injure others with cars all the time, yet we don't waltz in and take their cars away. I'd be in favour of keeping him from purchasing ammo but would let him keep the guns.

I don't like that the Judge mentioned alcohol use as well. I think his guns should go or she should be supervised when in possession?

Forget blindness. Moronic leptons such SiMPle should not own guns either.

The question should not be "Why shouldn't this person have a gun"?

It should be "Why SHOULD this person have a gun"?

The answer in this case is rather obvious.

Oh I wouldn't call myself an expert. But being that I lived under the parental rules of a twice decorated police officer for over 20 years and personally competed in NRA Bull’s-eye competitions against various officers of the law and was privy to police qualification courses more than a few times, I think I can safely assume I know more about law enforcement firearms training than a lot of people, least of all YOU.

Yeah, yeah, more cheap shots from the geezer, no surprise here. The only thing that flaps more than your gums is the loose skin hanging from your ass when you walk. But hey, I'll let your verbal abuse slide because I know you're quite upset over the closing down of the only gay massage parlor within battery range of your power chair.

Ooops. :blushing:

I guess you missed the part where I served AS a police officer for 25 years, including a tour of duty in the Anti-Terrorist squad (aka SWAT in your language). And a couple of years in the military. So, while daddy's little (little? what am I saying...) girl was playing party games with pea shooters, or hanging with gun freaks, your correspondent was at the front line, operating under a "shoot-to-kill" mandate. Our targets weren't cardboard cut outs, twinkie dink. So, I think your safe assumptions just went Code Red. Have another cake to ease your pain.

Well, you got me there...I'm damn sure there's no excess skin around your humungous hide to flap.

I'm not that hysterical over the closure of my massage parlour. There will be others. On the other hand, I'll bet you're still looking for one that offers heavy lifting equipment, and discount for large orders.
