I've managed retail and I know-staff aren't liable for those kind of mistakes
and it's against the law to even suggest they should make up any shortfall.

I guess you don't remember when I posted here about passing the phony $10 bill that I picked up in Richmond-a local greengrocer spotted it and wouldn't take it so I went to what was then Capers and they were singing Happy Birthday to some staff member -I waited until the song was finished anf handed the cashier the bill she never even looked @ it.
That woman still works there part time-so she wasn't fired and you can bet your boots she never gave them a real tenner out of her purse either.
