New Windows Security Scam

Unread post by What The Duce! »

October 13, 2008 (IDG News Service) Scammers are sending out phony e-mails that claim to include critical Windows security alerts, Microsoft Corp. warned Monday.

The fake alerts describe themselves as part of a new "experimental private version of an update for all Microsoft Windows OS users," Microsoft said in a note on the scam, posted Monday.

The e-mails then instruct the victim to download an attachment, which is actually a malicious Trojan Horse program known as Win32/Haxdoor. This software records sensitive information such as passwords and credit card numbers and sends this data back to the attackers who are running the scam.

I run Spybot-Search and Destroy and AVG- both free downloads and are updated ongoing.

Easy to Google/ download - five minutes and you have pretty good protection from the assholes out there.

then read this

October 13, 2008 (Computerworld) Security software suites don't protect users from real-world exploits, a bug-tracking company charged today after launching 300 test attacks against a dozen programs, including popular software from McAfee Inc., Symantec Corp. and Trend Micro Inc.

"The Internet security suites are marketing themselves as the one solution users need to be safe online," said Thomas Kristensen, chief technology officer at Secunia Inc., which ran the tests. "In our opinion, that's just not true."

the main point of the article above was the problem is people are not applying patches and the av/as suites dont monitor that. Today as an example MS released 6 windows patches and 2 for ms office

well in all fairness if all the spammers and hackers turned their focus on apple, macs would be almost as fucked up as windows. They target what most people use and most people use windows. However as macs get more popular you can expect more people to target them

I think there is another issue there. you cannot earn as much money if you create good product without problems. if you create cheep product you need army of IT and bunch additional software to support you and help you survive another day. and the best of all is when you start selling beta version of system and let market report the bugs as they discover them.

that really make sense since vista is in the same cycle as RIP windows 2000. it is sad that there are still people formatting drives on the new computers with vista in order to install XP (hopefully proffesional verison). sad reality.

not to mention the memory processor requirements.
