UBC History Professor Henry Yu

Post: # 7313Unread post Gary Oak »

UBC History Professor Henry Yu

I have been watching some youtube videos on Henry Yu. Is he teaching history ? Look at the spin ? Did the Chinese built the railroad ? Only partially built a bit of the BC railroad and non of the rest. They didn't even do half of the work on the BC railroad. White people arrived in Vancouver and saw all the Chinese and natives and thought "we must get rid of them" Where did he dig up this [fact] ? He definitely has a vivid imagination ? He sounds like he should be teaching in a mainland China university not a Canadian one. That the Chinese were displaced along with the natives by white people, what utter nonsense. That the Chinese were here first ? This is what he is implying. One issue that alarms one is that is the same kind of bogus claims that China has used to take Tibet, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, he is using now to take islands away from The Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Viietnama and Japan as well as their claim of the entire nation of Mongolia. By claiming Ghengis Khan was a Chinese emperor this also means that all the lands between western Europe and China are also Chinese. Chinese like natives ? most don't even know a polite term to call them in chinese. HUNG FAN is very derogatory. If you want to see for yourself call a chinese guy a WONG FAN with WONG meaning yellow as HUNG means red and FAN means FOREIGN uncivilised barbarian. Did chinese write the laws that are largely responsible for why Canada is such a great nation ? He is forgetting to mention how chinese as a rule think of filipinos, natives, blacks, whites. I read a very interesting book, The Trail Of 1858, which is about the BC Gold Rush. Our first governor deliberately tried to lure nonwhite immigrants in the hope that they would be more willing to fight the Americans who were flooding into BC and as this is how Britain lost Oregon by Americans flooding into Oregon and then merely assuming Oregon as their own. Thus this highly offensive statement by Henry Yu PHD, that white people arrived by train, the railroad THAT THE CHINESE BUILT and saw all these Chinese and natives running around and thought we must get rid of them" is indeed false. Of all the non-white immigrants that came to BC only a headtax was put on the Chinese and as I find it hard to believe that the pioneers were inherantly evil it most likely had to do with the obvious mentality that is explained in the below paragragh. Now why is it not racist to state the fact that white Americans were flooding in and could very easily takeover but to state the obvious that Chinese were hoping and trying to takeover by flooding their population in as they have in so many places is racist ? In the late 1800's some towns were half Chinese in population. I highly doubt that Chinese were any less racist then than they are now. When the Chinese percentage of a population gets large enough they tend to start showing their true nature and it surely would have alarmed the pioneers there of those eras. I find it hard to believe that Canadians have ever been as racist as Chinese were then , now or in any of the eras in between.

Here is another fallacy of Henry Yu's that white people came to Vancouver and saw all these Chinese and natives and thought " let's get rid of them" The few Chinese that were fortunate to live in Canada did not mix with Canadians as a rule and worked in often laundries , as houseboys etc... I doubt any white person remembers their grandparents as being so racist that they would have thought "let's get rid of them" if they saw some Chinese in Canada. What I am certain is that Hernry Yu's deceitful agenda is to make Chinese a founding culture of Canada with equal status with English and French because there were some fortunate individuals living here during the gold rush and later doing some of the labour work in the one province British Columbia. If Canada is founded by Chinese then it is a Chinese province that must be returned to China as Taiwan Tibet Mongolia Manchuria and Russia is as Ghengis Khan is claimed to be a Chinese leader in Chinese history books now. Chinese think in the long term and as the Tibetans were genocide since their being taken over.

VANCOUVER IS A EUROPEAN CREATION
Noticeable as their role was in Vancouver, the Chinese played a microscopic role in Canada`s history. In 1901, 96 percent of the Canadian population was European in origin; there were only 17, 043 Chinese immigrants (born outside Canada) relative to a population of 5.3 million. Vancouver, with the highest Chinese proportion throughout Canada’s history, was virtually a white European city from its beginnings in the 1870s to the 1980s. In the 1950s, when the city had been fully developed into a metropolis, the British accounted for about 75 percent of the population, and other Europeans accounted for about 18 percent, whereas the Asian proportion (Chinese and Japanese) accounting for only 3 percent. Patricia Roy's Vancouver, An Illustrated History (1980), exhibits a city that was overwhelmingly British in its architectural landscape, notwithstanding its Chinatown and Little Tokyo. All the major landmarks were British: the Post Office, built 1905-1910; Dominion Trust, the Canadian Pacific Railway station; Canadian Bank of Commerce; the Strand Theater and Birks Building, with their sidewalk canopies in 1933; the Tudor revival style homes in Shaughnessy Heights in the 1920s.
8 The sports, the education, the legal system -- every institution was British. The Founding Fathers of Vancouver, the Mayors, the magistrates, the school trustees, the chief constables, the physicians, the presidents of the Board of Trade were all British descendents.

Now Professor Henry Yu is calling for a much higher percentage of chinese educators to reflect the higher percentage of chinese students now enjoying the benefits of living in Canada and our education system. Heney Yu though enjoying the benefits of living in Canada and the benefits being employed by one of Canada's prestigious universities is allowed to teach outright falsehoods and half truths. If our education system is taken over by his fellow Chee Gong Tong brothers then how many falsehoods would they influence students with ? This is what I believe is their aim in asking for a much higher percentage of Chinese school administrators and teachers. Chinese think in the very long term. It does seem obvious to me that Professor Henry Yu is trying to lay a false claim to be used later to justify moves contrary to the best interests of non Chinese Canadians.

Can you imagine a white person talking about white persecution as this Henry Yu talks about Chinese persecution by whites ? Even a Klansman or a Nazi would tell him to shut up. If racism is the issue then why is there no mention of Chinese persecution of Mongols in Inner Mongolia ,Tibetans in Tibet ,Polynesians in Taiwan etc.... ? Henry Yu is obviously a fanatic. Does white treatment of Chinese at any time compare to the treatment of Indonesian maids in Hong Kong today ? Many are working 7 days a week in spite of the law demanding they get one day off a week. One woman beat her Indonesian maid with a stick until she was hospitalized with broken bones and only got a 500 HK$ fine [ approximately 80 C$ ] . I read the entire 1996 edition of The Rough Guide To China [ approximately 1,200 pages and in at least two provinces the governor ordered ALL foreigners killed including woman and children and they were. How is it that Professor Henry Yu doesn't feel this is worth mentioning ? Did Canadians ever do this to Chinese ? If you don't believe that Chinese men are far more racist than whites then learn Chinese. Sidney Lau has a superb series of books for learning Cantonese. I will warn you though that they will try to get some people to keep an eye on you as they will be worried about any Canadian finding out about their many FAN QING FU MING activities against Canada and Canadians. Filipinos are coming to Canada now and I don't hear any of them complaining about how evil white people are ? They like us and try to be Canadians and most Canadians including me like them too. They don't get alarmed that I speak tagalog as most Chinese men do that I speak Chinese.

The reason that Chinese were excluded is that one doesn't need to understand their oaths and rituals and that in these oaths and rituals the QING refers to the nonpeople who let them immigrate. FAN QING FU MING means overturn- FAN the uncivilized FOREIGN barbarians- QING and it is common knowledge that FU MING means support Chinese. Chinese immigrants know that it is the goal of many chinese to take over. Ask a Malaysian or a Thai how they like being taken over by Chinese. It is a very safe bet I believe that this UBC history professor Henry Yu is a member of a tong [ the Chee Gong Tong that is ] which has FAN QING FU MING among it's oaths and rituals and this tong also includes all top triad members all over the world as are top Chinese espionage employees, top chinese military [ including top chinese Canadian officers enjoying the benefits of being in the Canadian military while being sworn brothers of top Chinese military personnel ], top leaders of other tongs, top chinese politicians [ including Canadain Chinese politicians enjoying the benefits of living in Canada with Canadians ] ,top chinese police all over the world etc.... Kill the Qing destroy the Qing, extirminate the Qing etc... is also in the along with FAN QING FU MING. I have read that UBC professor Henry Yu is wants higher Chinese immigration to Canada to atone for the head tax which did prevent many Chinese from coming here. Now is it simply coincidence that one of the ways Chinese uses to take over nations is to flood a country with Chinese citizens ? If white people are such inherantly evil white supremists here then why isn't he encouraging Chinese in Canada to get on refugee boats and flee Canada ? I have not seen him complaining once about the ONE BILLION DOLLARS that Canada loses per month to Chinese spying. I don't see him talking about how CSIS has found that Chinese Canadiscams will spy for China for free if asked and that Chinese Intelligence agencies don't even expect to have to pay a Canadian Chinese to spy for them against Canada and Canadians. As Henry Yu frequently mentions white supremists are not ALL those who take oaths and rituals which include FAN QING FU MING not Chinese supremists and sworn enemies of Canada and Canadians ? Being a member of this tong not only makes him a sworn brother of all top chinese mafia [ triads ] all over the world but also Chinese intelligence agencies, top Chinese military, top Chinese government, top Chinese politicians, top Chinese businessmen etc...

Don't be fooled by humble behaviour. If one reads The Asian Mind Game http://www.amazon.com/The-Asian-Mind-Ga ... 0892563524

you will discover that Chinese get applauded for behaving in different manners to decieve the enemy. China's top heroin smuggler [ the trillionaire ] behaves as though he is a meek little elderly man. In reality the non chinese wife of a highly connected Chinese man told me that her husband says that this man is far more vicious that Stanley Ho the man who used to have a monopoly on the gambling in Macau. The Asian Mind Game is a must read for anybody doing business with Chinese.

For a good basic understanding of Chinese history and the Chinese business empire I recommend Lords Of The Rim by Sterling Seagravehttp://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1277 ... Of_The_Rim You will get a good idea of how Chinese cooperate together to take over the economies of nations and of what a merciless culture they come from.

Here is a paragraph from pages 243-244 in Lords Of The Rim 2010 China's Renaissance.
General Chen Yi's henchmen, including Mainland gangsters, engaged in wholesale extortion, kidnapping, embezzlement, and black marketeering. Any Taiwanese who dared to complain was branded a communist and a traitor, his property was expropriated, and he was clapped in jail. In a few months, Taiwan was ruined. Food ran out, cholera and bubonic plague struck. Despite their fear , people began to protest. On February 28, 1947, KMT soldiers beat a street vendor. When an angry crowd gathered, the soldiers shot them down, touching off riots that escalated into island-wide rebellion and demands for self-rule. Buying time General Chen Yi began negotiations, while KMT reinforcements poured over from the mainland. Fifty thousand troops were unleashed against the civilian population. All doctors, lawyers, journalists, teachers, and students were rounded up and shot, wiping out a generation of leaders. Mass executions took place all over the place everywhere. An assistant US Navy attaché saw civilians "bayoneted ... without provocation ... students tied together, being driven to the execution grounds. ... One foreigner counted more than thirty young bodies in students uniforms lying along a roadside east of Taipei; they had had their noses and ears slit or hacked off, and many had been castrated. Two students were beheaded near my front gate." More than 50,000 civilians were slain, none of them "aboriginals" Compared to the 1989 crackdown at Tienanmen, this was a major bloodbath. Yet there was no great international outcry against the KMT.

If a business owner becomes fairly successful he or she can expect a visit from a triad offering protection. If he or she refuses then the business owner will get a threat and if he or she still refuses then a worker or manager etc... will be beaten, the next time the owner will get beaten and if the owner still refuses then the owner will get killed. Do whites this to Chinese immigrants ? Chinese execute far more people than the rest of the world combined. Often using mobile execution vans and from two reliable sources they often use air to euthenise. These people are killed for organ harvesting, often without trial. I was told that they use air and refuse the doctors to use anesthetics. It's more cost effective I suppose.

During the Chinese civil war both sides ate prisoners of war. [ The Rough Guide To China 1996 edition ] Did we ever do this to Chinese ? How come Henry Yu doesn't feel the need to teach this historical fact.

Speaking two Chinese languages I see the huge number of Chinese everyday in Vancouver who don't speak English at all. I often ask them how they came to Canada and very often they had a good looking daughter who married a Chinese Cmadian man who then was able to get them in. I was offered 30,000 Canadian dollars about 20 years ago to do a scam marriage to get a Chinese family in. Chinese who have no loyalty to Canada and whose loyalty is to China naturally don't have a problem with doing this. I was told almost 20 years ago that I could have gotten more money back then. I wouldn't be surprised if the money now to do this scam is huge. Our citizenship is a huge industry for the triads and it appears that Henry Yu is helping them with his claims that Chinese should be a founding language of Canada. This false claim of Henry Yu isn't simply about giving Chinese language better representation. Prime Minister Harper has made it significantly more difficult for immigrants to come to Canada if they don't speak English or French which must be cutting into the profits of the triads Canadian citizenship industry and the Chinese governments efforts to flood us with their excess people in hopes that these immigrants can take us over. The Chinese government also is in on this industry as overseas communities are seen by them as their fifth columns or trojan horses.

Now why is it that Henry Yu has no interest in righting this historical wrong? Does anything that white Canadians have done compare to the countless other similar Chinese wrongs? If white Canadians is the past and colonial mentality and Chinese controlling Canada is the future is this what non Chinese Canadians deserve for our allowing Chinese to flood in in the numbers that Henry Yu would like to see ?
It should also be kept in mind that though UBC history professor Henry Yu constantly carries on about white racism in Canada surely he must know that while he enjoys a far better salary and is treated far better at a Canadian university than he would if his dream came true of Chinese taking over Canada. White and other non Chinese university professors at Chinese universities have many people watching them at all times for things to use against them which Henry Yu also surely knows yet there is no comments from him on this fact. If Canada is so racist then why is it that Vancouver has a Chinese police chief ? No city in China would even allow a non Chinese to be a police chief. It also has occurred to me that these same people that are enjoying all the benefits of living in Canada who whine about wrongs they believe white people are responsible for and have absolutely nothing good to say about white people yet even though they are free to leave this land and people they believe mistreats them so horribly they do not want to leave and encourage us to allow more of their countrymen to come to Canada. The reason that they have nothing good to say about us is because they don't like us and often hate us. Do we really need more people who hate us and support Chinese taking us over ? Henry Yu surely knows that the Chinese government is buying real estate in an effort to buy Canada almost legally http://chinawatchcanada.blogspot.ca/201 ... -boom.html Henry Yu also isn't concerned that over 505 of the the cases that CSIS is currently investigating involve Chinese activities. Henry Yu knows that Canada's xounter expionage agencies are already overwhelmed and he appears to have no problem with this and he obviously wants to overwhelm them more to benefit China. Also Henry Yu must be very aware of the huge amount of Chinese students working for China. Is the Chinese government paying their tuition and room and board for their espionage activites ? Surely Henry YU knows the answer to this and he isn't telling Canadians.http://chinawatchcanada.blogspot.ca/201 ... -usin.html

Here in the US the Chinese built the railroad half way across America, and out worked the largely Irish gangs coming from the East .
They also was treated very badly where they went, but the Irish, and many others was also when migrating in.
The Chinese was treated worse though having to take very degrading work just to live. I understand the distrust, and closed societies they built for themselves, wouldn't you if treated as lower than the low.

As for that professor, I see him as a hate monger. He's no different than the Jessy Jackson types.

I got this from another thread on a forum, and I wouldn't generalize like this person does.
I find that most people are just scared of differences, and sometimes that turns to racism.
If people looked around their own communities they would find they dislike more of their "own" than the other people they don't know.

If you were Chinese you would want to have someone to look down on too.

Chinese people think dark skin is bad/ugly.

Chinese people are indoctrinated by the idea that Africa is totally underdeveloped and needs China to basically take them over and rescue them.

Chinese people think all blacks are African, so if you are from America it will make no difference. Note: when Chinese people say ?? they mean African, not blacks.

Honestly, the Africans in Beijing don't help the image of blacks."

I suspect that you just don't recognise it much as t was all around me when until I knew chinese quite well and had gone to Hong KOng for about 6 years. I returned to Vancouver many years later, walked through chinatown and mentioned to a chinese friend who is a good guy that " I have just walked through chinatown and saw hate in the eye of every chinese guy I saw" he didn't argue as I am sure that he knew it was true.

Racism is a learned hatred, many times out of ignorance, but in some cases it's beat into you .
Our government officials here keep it alive, and people like Jessy Jackson, Al Sharpton, and even groups like the Skin heads, and NAACP.
I think if people would just spend the time to try to know someone of another color, or ethnicity they would be surprised that they are a lot like themselves.
Might learn something new also, or even have some good food you never had :woot:

Look at this fact that Professor Yu conveniently never feels the need to mention. He claims that Canada must allow more Chinese to come to atone for the head tax and Canadians should have to pay them big bucks too however China doesn't allow non Chinese immigration.

Chinese Shakedown in California

By Brenda Walker on June 21, 2009 at 11:44pm

One of the most financially successful immigrant groups in the country is getting on the apology bandwagon. A newly elected California Assembly Member, Paul Fong from Silicon Valley, has submitted a bill (ACR42) that demands a statement of remorse from Californians for historical discrimination agaist Chinese immigrants. Mr. Fong appears unaware that his victimhood bill is no way to win friends and influence people, particularly at a time when Californians want Sacramento to get serious about fixing the budget. (Contact information here.)

California should formally "express regrets" to the Chinese immigrants who were historically persecuted and abused while they helped build the Golden State's railroads, mines and agricultural fields, said a state legislator who is promoting legislation that would lead to the first-ever government apology to Chinese-Americans.

Assemblyman Paul Fong, D-Mountain View, the grandson of a Chinese immigrant who was interned at Angel Island, said his goal is to eventually convince the federal government to also issue an apology, and then legislate redress for the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, which specifically barred Chinese immigrants from the U.S. It was repealed in 1943.
[California should apologize for persecution of Chinese immigrants, legislator says, San Jose Mercury News, June 11, 2009]

However, American groveling is not sufficient for Mr. Fong; he wants money.

If he gets the state apology, Fong said, he will seek federal redress for the people interned in camps that operated from 1910 to 1942 at Angel Island. However, he did not say how much he wanted the government to pay.

When the U.S. government issued a 1988 apology for the World War II internment of 120,000 Japanese and Japanese-American citizens, it paid reparation of $20,000 for each individual who was interned.

Another article contained pertinent information about how Fong family utilized fraud to enter America: Calif. lawmaker seeks apology for Chinese workers, Google AP.

Fong's grandfather paid about $2,000 for fake identification papers and took a new name of Chan Share, becoming a "paper son." The term referred to immigrants who purchased fake identification papers from the Chinese who claimed they were citizens and wanted to help their children in China immigrate to America. The practice became popular after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that destroyed many birth records. [...]

"There were discriminatory laws on the books at the time, and he had to get around them," Fong said. "That was the way they did it."

See, Fong thinks it's fine to lie your way into America because of all the nasty discrimination. He doesn't seem to notice that his other country, the Peoples' Republic of China, doesn't permit immigrationof persons who are not racially Chinese.

In fact, it's quite true that early Chinese immigrants were treated poorly -- just like the Irish and other groups. Since then, the Chinese have done very well. The Chinese median family income is $10K above that of the American family's ($60,058 vs. $50,046), according to the Census Bureau's 2004 analysis, Asians in America.

But money-grubbing hypocrite Paul Fong has a high opinion of his racial tribe (as do many Chinese), and he apparently believes that Americans must be forced to pay for humiliating his grandfather.

Henry Yu knows that this is true. He also has no criticism of how chinese were treated far worse by the snakeheads but only has bad things to say about the people who made Canada the country that he wants to flood with Chinese immigrants.

Ottawa Was Justified in Sending the Komagata Maru Back to India
Ottawa Was Justified in Sending the Komagata Maru Back to India

Ottawa Was Justified in Sending the Komagata Maru Back to India
(IMMIGRATION WATCH, Posted on July 31, 2012 )
http://www.immigrationwatchcanada.org/2 ... o-india-2/

This year is the 98th anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident in which several hundred East Indians who had arrived by ship in Vancouver were denied access to Canada.

Although some Sikhs like to portray the KM incident as an incident in which they were victimized, the truth is much different. Here are two reasons why the federal gov't was justified in sending the KM back to India.

(1) BRITISH COLUMBIA AND THE REST OF CANADA WERE FED UP WITH LOW WAGE LABOURERS WHO HAD CAUSED SO MUCH TURMOIL FROM THE 1880?s TO 1914
Low-wage labourers had precipitated an enormous amount of anger, resentment and worker-displacement in British Columbia for decades. The Sikhs on board the Komagata Maru (as well as the ones who had come a decade or so earlier) belonged to this group. The Chinese and Japanese labourers, who had arrived earlier, had earned in their countries one-twentieth and one tenth respectively of what Canadian workers earned. The East Indians were even cheaper labour. Most had worked in India at wages as low as one-fiftieth of Canadian wages. Canadian workers and Canada's gov't believed the East Indians' low wage tolerance would cause the same worker-displacement problems that the Chinese and Japanese had caused.

How did displacement occur? Chinese labour contractors set the precedent for cheap labourers in B.C. They underbid other contractors or arranged to hire out individual Chinese labourers they imported. To obtain contracts with employers, some of these Chinese contractors bid so low that they lost money on the contracts they signed. To compensate, these contractors required the Chinese labourers to buy food and supplies from them at prices which ensured that the contractors would re-gain the money they had lost on the labour part of their contracts. Some of these contractors became the wealthiest people in B.C.'s Chinatowns.

Like modern snakeheads, Chinese labour contractors virtually owned their labourers. The labourers who came to B.C. could never have afforded to pay their fare from China to Canada and the Head Tax. The Chinese contractor bought steamship tickets and paid the Head Tax for labourers on the condition that the labourers would work for them. To make sure the contractors got repaid, the contractors arranged with employers to have Chinese labourers' wages paid directly to the contractors every payday until the Chinese labourers had paid off their debts. In the early years of this system, it often took two years for the labourers to pay back what they owed.
Many white labourers complained to both Royal Commissioners and to individual politicians that this arrangement meant that Chinese labourers were virtual slave labourers and unfair competitors. They said that these imported workers were displacing them from their jobs or keeping wages low. Many told of white workers who had had to leave the country because of cheap labour. Others complained that the practice of importing contract labourers had discouraged many real settler families (in contrast to single male temporary workers from Asia) from ever coming to Canada. Many modern historians have ignored these complaints and given their sympathy to the Chinese, Japanese and East Indians.

The most dramatic example of potential displacement occurred in 1907. Canada's Deputy Minister of Labour, Mackenzie King, uncovered a Japanese labour contractor's plan to import up to 2000 Japanese labourers probably to displace a large part of the CPR workforce of 5000 in western Canada. Rumours about this plan (and another to displace five hundred coal miners at a Dunsmuir-owned mine on Vancouver Island) had circulated in the Vancouver area prior to the Sept. 7, 1907 Vancouver Riot. Contrary to what the politically correct like to preach today about the cause of the riot, these displacement contracts contributed significantly to that riot.

Also contrary to what some Sikhs contend today, it was not Sikh devotion to the British Empire that resulted in Sikh interest in Canada. Instead, it was a decline in steamship ticket sales to the Chinese (especially after the $500 head tax in 1904) that caused the steamship companies to look to India for replacement passengers. This is a clear example of the connection between the KM incident and earlier cheap labourer incidents. Mackenzie King discovered this when he conducted a Royal Commission in 1907 to find out why about 12,000 Japanese, East Indians and Chinese had arrived in B.C. in the first 10 months of 1907. At this time, the population of Vancouver was about 60,000. Mackenzie King stated that such an influx caused "consternation" in the Vancouver population.
The Royal Commissioners of the 1901 inquiry into Japanese and Chinese immigration to Canada summed up their concern (and probable Canadian concerns in 1907 and with the KM in 1914) in one major question: Does Canada need these cheap labourers? The answer was a resounding "NO !"

(2) BRITISH COLUMBIA IN PARTICULAR HAD REACHED THE END OF ITS TOLERANCE OF WIDESPREAD IMMIGRATION FRAUD
The Komagata Maru (KM) incident was preceded by the Panama Maru incident of late 1913. That incident helps to explain much of what happened in the Komagata Maru incident 7 months later. The Panama Maru had docked In Canada with 56 East Indians on October 17, 1913. Most of the passengers had not lived in Canada previously, but claimed that they had. They produced fraudulent money order receipts, time cards, etc. to substantiate their claims. Immigration authorities allowed 17 (those physically recognized to have been here before) to land, but they detained 39 of the 56.

A Board of Inquiry looked into the case and ordered the 39 to be deported, but litigious East Indians in Canada determined to make the Panama Maru case a test case. Their lawyer, J. Edward Bird, appeared before Justice Dennis Murphy, but Murphy denied their claim. Bird then went to Chief Justice Gordon Hunter, notorious for appearing drunk in court and a clear embarrassment to the government. Hunter upheld their appeal on a technicality, so most of the 39 were released. The remaining 4, who had previously been ordered deported for medical reasons, escaped from detention and could not be found.

The Panama Maru incident was a big embarrassment to the federal government. It showed British Columbia that immigration bungling continued and that much stronger measures had to be taken. Immigration authorities became determined, if possible, to avoid the courts and the threat of escape from detention.

Gurdit Singh, the man who organized the KM voyage, had enjoyed litigation success in Singapore and was confident that he could repeat the success in Canada. In fact, despite the warnings of British officials, he boasted to authorities in Hong Kong (the port from which the KM departed for Canada) that he would challenge the Canadian government in court and that after he had succeeded, he would bring up to 25,000 labourers from India to Canada, particularly to B.C. This was not just an economic threat, but also a cultural one. (As a result of Canadian weakness in dealing with these threats today, both have been realized in parts of B.C.) Later in Japan, Singh boasted that 10,000 Indian troops (mostly Sikhs) would rebel if the KM were stopped from landing.
Significantly, in May of 1914, Canada was in the midst of a recession, with very high unemployment. As Gurdit Singh would quickly discover, 1914 was not a wise time to launch a test case for Sikh labourers.

In addition, both the Panama Maru and KM incidents had been preceded by extensive Chinese and Japanese fraud:

A. The Chinese committed extensive fraud to avoid the Head Tax. Essentially, the Head Tax was like a tariff. It tried to discourage cheap Chinese labour from entering Canada. In cases where Chinese still wanted to come, the Head Tax tried to neutralize the wage advantage Chinese labourers had. However, in response to Ottawa's generosity in giving re-entry certificates to Chinese labourers who wanted to return to China for a visit, many sold or loaned these certificates to Chinese in China who evaded the Head Tax when they came to Canada.

Chinese fraud reached epidemic levels after the $500 Head Tax in 1904. In 1910-11, Justice Dennis Murphy conducted a Royal Commission into "Chinese Frauds" . He found many: Chinese had stowed away aboard ships coming to British Columbia; they claimed that they were businessmen (at that time exempt from the Head Tax); they pretended to be sons of businessmen (also exempt from the Head Tax); they impersonated others, etc. He also found that the Chinese interpreter, who was employed to interview incoming Chinese, was involved in the fraud and that he had abetted many to enter Canada illegally. For details see http://www.immigrationwatchcanada.org/2 ... on-frauds/

B. The Japanese also committed much fraud. In order for Japanese to receive naturalization papers which were required to obtain fishing boat licences. In the late 1890?s and early 1900?s, many Japanese had committed perjury when asked to declare how long they had spent in Canada. (A minimum number of years was required.) By 1900, this had resulted in Japanese fishermen owning 45% of all gill-net fishing licences. By committing fraud, they had become an economic force completely disproportionate to their numbers. Their willingness to accept low fish prices caused considerable anger and conflict with other fishermen.

In contrast to chaotic China, Japan had firm control of emigration from Japan. (NOTE: Emigration from China and Japan was a Chinese and Japanese labourer issue. Other Chinese and Japanese were exempt.) In the early 1900?s, Canada was able to negotiate agreements in which Japan either forbade or severely limited Japanese labourers going to Canada. But, in 1907, a Japanese labour contractor company from Vancouver used its corrupt influence to convince the Japanese government to give passports to Japanese labourers to go to Canada.
When this fraud (and other illegal Japanese immigration from Hawaii) was exposed, the Japanese government was so embarrassed that it was eager to make amends. It responded by agreeing to continuous passage legislation which required cheap labourers from Japan to start their trip to Canada from Japan, their home country, not Hawaii. This legislation was applied to India also. The Sikhs like to say they were singled out unjustly, but the truth is that continuous passage legislation was a clear attempt to curb cheap labour, reduce economic hardship for Canadian labourers, and to stop immigration fraud.
All of this fraud, the displacement of Canadian workers and the apparent inability of the federal government to end it combined in the decision to refuse entry to most of the Komagata Maru passengers.
As one Vancouver Sun columnist (Daphne Bramham) has put it, there was little difference between the Komagata Maru incident and the landing of several Chinese ships off the coast of Vancouver Island in 1999. Both were illegal landings and government officials were right to stop them. It is absurd now for Canada to be apologizing to the Sikhs?just as it would be for Canada to apologize to China 100 years from now for sending back most of the Chinese aboard the ships that landed on Vancouver Island.
If some Sikhs want to play the apology game, let's remind them of all the refugee and immigration fraud some of them have recently committed (so well demonstrated by the Laibar Singh case). Let's also remember the turmoil some of them have caused in Canada's labour market as a result of immigration, in our refugee system as a result of the notorious Singh Decision, and in our legal system with the Air India bombing.

The major purpose of the demands of some Sikhs for a Komagata Maru apology is to make Canadians feel that Canada is guilty of a crime. According to these Sikhs, the only way Canada can compensate is to maintain or increase current senselessly-high immigration levels.

The truth is that many Canadians think that if someone should be apologizing, these people should be the ones to apologize to Canada. And the best way they can do that is to stop making demands that Canada cater to them.

The more sensible Sikhs should help them and Canada to achieve this goal.

If white people are so horrible to Chinese then why is he trying to convince us to allow Chinese to outpopulate us rather than trying to find ways for the Chinese population in Canada to escape the horrors of living amongst the whites that he sees as so racist ,inferior and horrible ?

He certainly seems entitled to criticise whites and especially British Canadians. it is also interesting that he has nothing to say about the treatment of Mongols in Inner Mongolia or Tibetans in Tibet etc.... He obviously has an agenda.

The ousted director of a B.C. anti-immigration group has launched a campaign attempting to get a well-known UBC history professor fired.

Bradley Saltzberg recently was dismissed as spokesman for the group Putting Canada First, an organization which has advocated against Chinese language signs in Richmond and West Vancouver.

Putting Canada First distanced itself from Saltzberg after an expose article by the South China Morning Post, which alleged Saltzberg had used aliases while attacking Vancouver mayoral candidate Meena Wong. According to the South China Morning Post, Putting Canada First
