'Artificial Intelligence Is As Dangerous As Nuclear Weapons': AI Pioneer Warns Smart Computers Could Doom Mankind

July 20, 2015 | Richard Gray

Artificial intelligence has the potential to be as dangerous to mankind as nuclear weapons, a leading pioneer of the technology has claimed.

Professor Stuart Russell, a computer scientist who has lead research on artificial intelligence, fears humanity might be 'driving off a cliff' with the rapid development of AI.

He fears the technology could too easily be exploited for use by the military in weapons, putting them under the control of AI systems.

Leading artificial intelligence pioneer Stuart Russell has compared artificial intelligence to the development of nuclear weapons. He particularly fears what will happen if AI is used in weapons and military systems. Films such as Terminator have given what some believe is a glimpse of what could happen

He points towards the rapid development in AI capabilities by companies such as Boston Dynamics, which was recently acquired by Google, to develop autonomous robots for use by the military.

Professor Russell, who is a researcher at the University of California in Berkeley and the Centre for the study of Existential Risk at Cambridge University, compared the development of AI to the work that was done to develop nuclear weapons.

Google has set up an ethics board to oversee its work in artificial intelligence.

The search giant has recently bought several robotics companies, along with Deep Mind, a British firm creating software that tries to help computers think like humans.

One of its founders warned artificial intelligence is 'number one risk for this century,' and believes it could play a part in human extinction.

'Eventually, I think human extinction will probably occur, and technology will likely play a part in this,' DeepMind's Shane Legg said in a recent interview.

Among all forms of technology that could wipe out the human species, he singled out artificial intelligence, or AI, as the 'number 1 risk for this century.'

The ethics board, revealed by web site The Information, is to ensure the projects are not abused.

Neuroscientist Demis Hassabis, 37, founded DeepMind two years ago with the aim of trying to help computers think like humans.

His views echo those of people like Elon Musk who have warned recently about the dangers of artificial intelligence.

Professor Stephen Hawking also joined a group of leading experts to sign an open letter warning of the need for safeguards to ensure AI has a positive impact on mankind.

In an interview with the journal Science for a special edition on Artificial Intelligence, he said: 'From the beginning, the primary interest in nuclear technology was the "inexhaustible supply of energy".

'The possibility of weapons was also obvious. I think there is a reasonable analogy between unlimited amounts of energy and unlimited amounts of intelligence.

'Both seem wonderful until one thinks of the possible risks. In neither case will anyone regulate the mathematics.

'The regulation of nuclear weapons deals with objects and materials, whereas with AI it will be a bewildering variety of software that we cannot yet describe.

'I'm not aware of any large movement calling for regulation either inside or outside AI, because we don't know how to write such regulation.'

This week Science published a series of papers highlighting the progress that has been made in artificial intelligence recently.

In one, researchers describe the pursuit of a computer that is able to make rational economic decisions away from humans while another outlines how machines are learning from 'big data'.

Professor Russell, however, cautions that this unchecked development of technology can be dangerous if the consequences are not fully explored and regulation put in place.

He said: 'Here's what Leo Szilard wrote in 1939 after demonstrating a [nuclear] chain reaction: 'We switched everything off and went home. That night, there was very little doubt in my mind that the world was headed for grief.'

'To those who say, well, we may never get to human-level or superintelligent AI, I would reply: It's like driving straight toward a cliff and saying, 'Let's hope I run out of gas soon!'

In April Professor Russell raised concerns at a United Nations meeting in Geneva over the dangers of putting military drones and weapons under the control of AI systems.

He joins a growning number of experts who have warned that scenarios like those seen in films from Terminator, AI and 2001: A Space Odyssey are not beyond the realms of possibility.

He: 'The basic scenario is explicit or implicit value misalignment - AI systems [that are] given objectives that don't take into account all the elements that humans care about.

'The routes could be varied and complex

Big Brother - New Technologies Tracking You At Home & Work

October 15, 2015

By David Smith

You know that dystopian future that George Orwell painted in his famous book ’1984’? Well, what may have seen as paranoid and outlandish at the time the book was released is fast becoming reality.

While recent leaks by Edward Snowden revealed just how extensively the government was intruding on the privacy of citizens, there has been little effort or interest in covering the same practice in corporations.

Companies are increasingly being tempted to monitor, track, compare and rate their employees, right down to the level of eventually recording every employee statement and action.

The ubiquitous nature of technology has made tracking and monitoring a person easier than ever before and now employers are using more sophisticated methods than to play big brother.

Bank of America, for example has used sensor badges to monitor employee movements, tone of voice, how often they got up or talked to their fellow employees and a few other parameters. A similar technology was used by US Company Cubist Pharmaceuticals to determine how energetic employees were and the behavior patterns that corresponded with high productivity.

All of this data is being collected in the name of predictive analysis and to maximize efficiency.

One of the more controversial monitoring issues is when workplace tracking extends beyond the workplace walls. Employees are sometimes being forced to download applications that would track their every movement, but what happens when your work follows you home?

The story of an employee at Intermex, who was required to download an app called Xora on her phone, went viral recently. Myrna Arias, the employee in question, found that this app continued to track her movement even when she was off the clock. She was fired for deleting this application because she did not want to be tracked during her personal hours.

Hitachi also recently unveiled a sociometric badge that purports to help measure the happiness index of an employee. The company’s top secret algorithm works by tracking the heart rate of the employee, the speed of walking, nodding your head, talking to other employees and overall physical activity.

Activities which promote employee happiness and push up productivity levels are then actively promoted to employees or may even be made mandatory.

It’s staggering to think that this sort of invasion of privacy is never talked about whenever concerns over tracking are discussed. One of the reasons for this is that a lot of this tracking and monitoring has the backing of the law.

Companies are well within their rights to monitor employee activity, movement and even communication if they can establish that it was work related. Most phones and laptops that are provided by the company come installed with tracking software, including keystroke logging, that provides the employer access to any and all communication.

This includes all websites visited, screen shots taken, social media, chat and instant messaging (IM) accessed, document tracking, and anything else accessed on company computers and phones.

These devices travel with employees to their homes and/or stay on their person more often than not.

With work becoming more remote than ever before, this delineation between company time and personal time is also becoming blurred. Bosses expect you to always reply to emails immediately even if you are at home or on vacation. Conference calls are frequently scheduled during vacation days with blatant disregard for the employee’s private time.

Should an employee be wary of doing something that may or may not please their employers all the time? Should there be no reasonable expectation of privacy?

It is only a matter of time before more and more employers start leveraging these technologies to track the lifestyles of their employees and mold them to suit their needs through positive and negative reinforcement.

The future that Orwell imagined with big brother breathing down our necks is well and truly here.

“Every president has been manipulated national security officials”: David Talbot exposes America’s “deep state”
http://www.salon.com/2015/10/15/every_p ... eep_state/

From World War II though JFK, “The Devil’s Chessboard” explores how Allen Dulles used the CIA as a tool of elites

—This year’s best spy thriller isn’t fiction – it’s history. David Talbot’s previous book, the bestseller “Brothers: The Hidden History of the Kennedy Years” explored Robert F. Kennedy’s search for the truth following his brother’s murder. His new work, “The Devil’s Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America’s Secret Government,” zooms out from JFK’s murder to investigate the rise of the shadowy network that Talbot holds ultimately responsible for the president’s assassination.
—This isn’t merely a whodunit story, though. Talbot’s ultimate goal is exploring how the rise of the “deep state” has impacted the trajectory of America, and given our nation’s vast influence, the rest of the planet. “To thoroughly and honestly analyze [former CIA director] Allen Dulles’s legacy is to analyze the current state of national security in America and how it undermines democracy,” Talbot told Salon. “To really grapple with what is in my book is not just to grapple with history. It is to grapple with our current problems.”

Just as America’s current national security apparatus has used terrorism as a justification for spying on American citizens, torture, and the annihilation of innocent civilians as collateral damage, Talbot places these justifications in a Cold War context, by showing how spymaster Allen Dulles shrugged off countless atrocities using the threat of communism. For readers unfamiliar with Dulles’ history, the first few chapters are like being splashed in the face with a bucket of ice water. Talbot’s assertion that Dulles is a psychopath is hard to dismiss after the intelligence agent is shown covering up the Holocaust prior to America’s intervention into World War II by keeping crucial information exposing the horrors of concentration camps from reaching President Roosevelt. Allen Dulles and his fellow Cold Warriors saw Russia, a U.S. ally during World War II – not Nazi Germany – as the real enemy.

Jumping from geopolitical strategy to the psychological realm, Talbot details how it was not only enemies who had reason to fear Dulles, but his own friends and family, as well. The book veers into a dark, terrifying investigation of the MKUltra Project, a hideous “mind control program” developed by the CIA during Dulles’ reign as director, that dosed unsuspecting people with LSD, pushed the limits of sleep deprivation and engaged in other deeply unethical experiments. The program has been exposed, bit by bit, over decades, thanks to lawsuits and previous investigative reporting, but Talbot sheds light on how Dulles subjected his own son and attempted to “enroll” his wife in these hideous “therapies.”

By the time “The Devil’s Chessboard” eventually climaxes with the events that unfolded in Dallas in 1963, Talbot’s argument that Dulles had both the power and temperament to execute such a plot is more than believable. “Dulles’ favorite word about someone was whether they were useful or not,” Talbot said. “And that’s the way he thought of everyone – to what extent could he use them.”

This interview has been lightly edited for clarity. [Full disclosure: David Talbot is the founder and former CEO of Salon.]

You begin the book by detailing the Dulles brothers’ sympathy, collaboration and eventual rescue of many high-ranking Nazis during and after World War II. Once you see how comfortable and even eager they were to align themselves with people who epitomize the worst evils of the 20th century, it becomes easier to accept some of the most shocking accusations that come later in the book. Why were the brothers so willing to offer support, even to the point of committing treason, for the Nazis?

I think the story of the Dulles brothers is the story of the amorality of American power, and by extension, all power. On some level, Allan Dulles was a psychopath. He didn’t feel the feelings of other people, and certainly wasn’t able to put himself in shoes of the Jewish people, who were on the brink of the Holocaust in Europe, and even during the Holocaust. He was a man who felt history and politics should be controlled by the elite few. He and his brother were raised in this milieu. Their family was full of statesmen and people who had been at the helm of the country for generations.

They felt that the greater goal of America during the war was reestablishing Germany as a bulwark against growing Soviet power. They felt all along that the Soviet Union represented the greater threat. They were, in fact, very socially comfortable with many members of the Nazi elite, including bankers, security and intelligence people. To them, the whole question about war crimes and the horrors the Nazis had committed during the war were secondary to the more important geo-political questions [such as] who will rebuild Germany after the war and how to make sure the Soviet Union does not overrun Europe.

The thing that I found startling when I was researching the book was the extent to which Dulles, as the top U.S. spy in continental Europe throughout most of the war, was again and again given inside reports on the Holocaust… of what happening inside this inferno and the massive roundup of Jews, and what was happening to them once they were rounded up. He was given these reports at great risk of these people who snuck into Switzerland – with documents and eyewitness accounts – and again and again he failed to relay these inside reports to Washington as it was developing. So, imagine the kind of compartmentalization – there is some kind of psychopathology to it – where it doesn’t even enter into your equation all this massive suffering of the Jewish people.

Dulles was an incredibly cold and remote figure, even with his family. For him, it was all about the game of power. That’s why I called the book: “The Devil’s Chessboard.” He and his brother were obsessive chess players, and they treated people as if they were pawns in their game, and not as human beings.

So it’s clear that even during the height of World War II, while the U.S. and Russia were fighting as allies against the Axis Powers, the Dulles brothers saw Russia as the real enemy. One of the most notorious manifestations of this agenda that you discuss in the book is how an attempt to rescue and negotiate with Nazis – against Roosevelt’s wishes – during Operation Sunrise helped trigger the Cold War by proving to Russia that the U.S. couldn’t be trusted. Was the Cold War inevitable?

Look, Joseph Stalin was no choirboy. He was a monster. And he was gripped with his own dark paranoia as well. Certainly what he did to his people was barbaric – as barbaric as what Hitler did to his people. So, I am not defending Stalin at all. But the fact is: FDR had worked out a very interesting partnership with him, and without that partnership, Hitler couldn’t have been defeated.

The Soviet Union and Soviet people took the brunt of Hitler’s violence and turned it back against him. Really, the Soviet Union was primarily responsible – although American history books don’t reflect this – for the defeat of Nazi forces. FDR knew that he had to keep that coalition together. There were a number of people in the Roosevelt administration – including Roosevelt himself – who felt that, for the good of world peace, that partnership with Russia had to be continued after the war.

So, I feel that if FDR had lived, there is a good chance that the Cold War could’ve been avoided because of the unique relationship of trust between Stalin and Roosevelt. Even while Roosevelt was alive and was sick in the final weeks of war, he was still struggling to maintain that delicate partnership. But, at the same time, you have Dulles in Switzerland, doing everything he can to undermine that partnership by going behind FDR’s back, in violation of FDR’s policy of unconditional surrender. He had a policy that no one was supposed to negotiate deals with the Nazi leaders, that the Nazis were to be fully crushed.

In defiance of that, Allen Dulles throughout most of his time in Switzerland, was meeting with various high-level Nazi representatives, and trying to cut a separate deal with them. [Dulles’s deals] would’ve left much of the Nazi regime highly intact. And in fact, he does cut this deal in Sunrise with Karl Wolff, who is head of Nazi security in Italy and a vile figure (who by all measures should’ve been tried in Nuremberg with the original defendants, and probably would’ve been convicted and hung). Wolff was the right-hand man to [SS Chief] Himmler and the liaison between Hitler and Himmler. This is a guy who had lots of blood on his hands.

But, Dulles protected him and made this deal with him that really didn’t result in anything significant from the strategic point of view. It might’ve ended the war in Italy a few days earlier, but it didn’t save many lives – except the lives of war criminals whom Dulles was dealing with. And, as you say, the even worse effect of this was to instill the idea in Stalin’s mind that the United States was stabbing him in the back by cutting this separate deal in Italy. Everything that President Roosevelt had done to try and maintain this partnership with Stalin throughout the war was effectively dismantled by Dulles in a matter of weeks through the Operation Sunrise dealings.

What do you think Dulles ultimately saw the as the benefits of Operation Sunrise? Was heightening this confrontation between the U.S. and Russia, and antagonizing Stalin his goal?

Operation Sunrise was prompted by several things or had several motivations. One: he was trying to stop the Red Army, who were advancing across Europe. So he was trying to cut a peace deal as quickly as possible with the Nazi forces that would prevent the Soviet army from entering Italy (there was a strong communist party in Italy too – a strong Left).

For him, it was “the clash of civilizations” [similar to how] many conservatives feel today about Islam. Communism and the Soviet Union represented, to people like the Dulles brothers – who were these iconic mouthpieces or lawyers or diplomats for Western capitalism – the ultimate enemy. So, Russia had to be stopped and crushed at all costs. They saw the Cold War as inevitable. Just as many of the Nazis they were dealing with saw the Cold War as part two of their own epic crusade against Bolshevism. In that respect, the Nazi war criminals and the Dulles brothers really did have a common enemy and a common goal.

In some ways, because of people like the Dulles brothers, and other like-minded people in the U.S. government and military, we didn’t defeat the Third Reich so much as repurpose them for the Cold War. Many of the people in [Chancellor Konrad] Adenauer’s government in West Germany after the war included a number of high-ranking Nazis.

In the CIA’s employment of former Nazis, American agents worked very closely with these people who part of a regime that was characterized by fascism, violence against its own people, domestic surveillance and other similarly undemocratic attributes. How much of an influence did Nazis have on the nascent CIA and, in a greater sense, the American government?

I think the Nazis had a very pernicious influence on Washington’s thinking during the Cold War. [German intelligence chief] Reinhard Gehlen, for instance, was feeding Dulles and the CIA all sorts of false information about military strength of the Soviet Union, and their aggressive intentions. The Soviet Union, of course, had suffered epically during World War II and was in no mood to plunge into World War III.

But in the mind of people like Gehlen, these fascists who had been at war with the Soviet Union for years, they thought the Soviet Union was about to launch World War III. They injected a paranoid spore into Washington’s mind, and they fed people like CIA officials with lots of bogus intelligence. So, in some ways, our paranoia about the Soviet Union… you see that through the figure of the ex-Nazi scientist “Dr. Strangelove” in the Kubrick film, you that sort of mentality. That was all too true…the feeling that in some ways World War III or this nuclear Holocaust that many people thought was coming was the final stage of this Wagnerian, fascist, apocalyptic view of history.

There are other characters in “Dr. Strangelove” inspired by real people too. General Ripper was influenced by [U.S. Air Force general] Curtis LeMay, who you talk about in the book as wanting to use nuclear weapons or atomic bombs as a solution to every foreign policy.

That’s right. In fact, I was talking with Dan Ellsberg about the film, and he said that he and other defense analysts, who were working at the Pentagon at the time, called it a documentary, not a film, because it was so accurate and true to life. So, the “mind meld” between former Nazis like Gehlen and Dulles was incredibly poisonous and had tragic consequences throughout the Cold War.

Although your book is historical nonfiction, it reads like a spy thriller. So even though we’re talking about events that happened decades ago, I don’t want to spoil readers by giving away your whole case for why Allen Dulles was ultimately the mastermind behind JFK’s murder and the subsequent coverup. So I’ll just ask you to explain however much of the case you’re comfortable with.

I tried, in a very thoroughly documented way, to show how not only Dulles, but the men who were in his network of powerful Wall Street bankers and lawyers and powerful figures in Washington in the national security world developed a feeling that they were the true center of power in America, and not whoever happened to be occupying the White House.

–which wasn’t necessarily untrue.

Right, I mean, that was the beginning of what many scholars now call the deep state. [The deep state] is essentially an alternative network of power that runs the country no matter who is in the White House. I think the book is in some ways a narrative that brings that idea to life. It wasn’t just Kennedy; As I said, it was starting with Roosevelt, then Truman, then Eisenhower — theses presidents that Dulles and the people around Dulles were serving, they were also subverting. They were basically following their own line, the line they had worked out privately amongst themselves in groups like the Council on Foreign Relations, and other elite organizations, or just over dinners or at the private clubs they belonged to (The Metropolitan Club or the Navy Club or the Alibi Club).

So, by the time that this young Jack Kennedy comes along in the final third of [my] book, you start to see that Dulles doesn’t have much respect for the president. He particularly didn’t have much respect for a young, untested president like John F. Kennedy. He had first met Kennedy when he was a very young and physically frail senator. He had just been operated on for back surgery and could barely stand up. He met him at the Kennedy family home back in Palm beach. He thought of himself as Kennedy’s mentor and tutor, and he thought JFK would be a very pliable, young president and open to direction and advice from men like Dulles.

But they had this very acrimonious split over CIA-led invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs, where Kennedy felt he had been lied to and sandbagged, and forced into supporting this invasion. I think that the plan all along was the CIA had wanted the invasion to fail, but Dulles hoped and was completely convinced that Kennedy would be forced to send in the full might of the U.S. military to save the invasion and to crush Castro. When Kennedy didn’t do that and refused to escalate it into an international crisis, it provoked this split within the Kennedy government that led to Dulles being forced out of power, much to his shock. He had never been treated that way by a president).

But, he doesn’t just go back home to [retire] after that. As my book shows, he goes back to Georgetown and begins to set up an anti-Kennedy government in exile. He operates as if he’s still running the CIA. And when I read that when I was doing my research… that set off all sorts of lights for me because here you have a guy who is not going gently into the good night of retirement. He feels in some ways Kennedy is an aberrant president and doesn’t deserve to be in power, and that he isn’t really protecting the interest of the state as vigilantly as he should. So, he begins to meet with all his former top aides at his home. These are not just top officials within the CIA, but field agents. He is dining with them in the clubs in Washington. And they are basically creating their own policy.

Again, I show how they acted to subvert Kennedy’s policies, which Kennedy… as his administration went on was trying to find a way out of the Cold War, out of this nuclear knot that had been tied. He and his counterpart Nikita Kruschev were trying to find a way to loosen this knot, but the national security hardliners, who were in control of the CIA, even after Dulles was fired, thought that was weak, naïve, and a dangerous policy. They tried to resist it in every way they could.

I think these tensions between the Kennedy White House and these hardliners grew and grew over the next few years, and exploded in Dallas. I do indicate that Dulles was centrally involved in the assassination planning and that the assassination team that he had created to kill foreign leaders like Fidel Castro and others… that several members of these teams were actually spotted in Dallas in the weeks leading up to the assassination. Allan Dulles himself, who had been retired for two years, during the weekend of Kennedy’s assassination, goes to a remote CIA facility, which is an alternative command post in northern Virginian called “The Farm,” where he monitors activity in Dallas.

Of course, he also becomes a prominent figure on the Warren Commission [the official commission to investigate JFK’s assassination]. He lobbied to have himself appointed by President Johnson on the Warren Commission. He was so active in directing that so-called investigation that some close observers thought it should’ve been called the Dulles Commission.
advertisement

So, there are no smoking guns – because we are talking about the CIA – and they were careful about having no smoking guns. I am writing about a very secretive world and there aren’t any obvious pieces of evidence, but there are many pieces of evidence that I do accumulate that think, overall, make a convincing case that Allen Dulles did play a crucial role in these events.

The Kennedy assassination, and related events, such as the Bay of Pigs fiasco and the Warren Commission, are some of the most thoroughly investigated and analyzed chapters of recent American history. How do you go about digging up evidence that hasn’t already been found and stories that haven’t been told? What is the difference between an investigative reporter and a historian?

A lot of these doors are shut when you are dealing with the intelligence world – obviously, they don’t want this history to come out. Recently, the CIA released with great fanfare hundreds of presidential CIA briefings that were given to President Kennedy and Johnson, but they were heavily redacted and controlled. When they do a document release, it is very heavily choreographed. Some things still come out in these document releases. After Oliver Stone’s film, JFK, there was so much public pressure on the government to release classified material related to Kennedy assassination and presidency there was a law passed called the JFK Records Review Act and thousands and thousands of pages were released. The CIA is still withholding 15,000 key documents related to the Kennedy assassination including [documents related to] people in the Dulles assassination group. It is vital that we get those 15,000 documents that the CIA is still withholding in defiance of that law.

There are a lot of clues in those [released] documents and I have used a lot of them. For instance, in the Nazi period that I write about, there was a bill passed by Congress called The Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act that had a wealth of information about the extent to which the U.S. intelligence was collaborating with leading Nazis, and I drew on that wealth of material. Many historians are doing that now as well. That is important, and I do not want to downplay that – how important it is that we have a right to our own history. As Orwell wrote, “Those who control the past, control the future.”

Even when you meet a stonewall there, you can go around it sometimes by finding living sources. So, for the book, I interviewed a number of people who were the children of major CIA officials including Allen Dulles’s daughter, Joan, who was nearing 90 when I talked to her. She is an amazing person, and in some way, the exact opposite of her father, who was this cold and remote figure. She is a retired Jungian therapist, living in Santa Fe. She drives an old Prius with an Obama sticker. She represents everything that would make her father scream in his grave. She, late in her life, is trying to come to terms about what her family legacy is all about, and this dark side of history. As a Jungian, she realizes that the darkness hold many valuable truths if you can shine a light on them. She and I, together, though many interviews, tried to make sense about her father, her parent’s marriage, and about what kind of man he was.

I interviewed a young – at the time – army intelligence officer in Rome at a critical period, post-WWII. It was the period when Dulles and associates like James Jesus Angleton were setting up Nazi ratlines to let these war criminal escape. As they were doing this, this young, conscientious intelligence army officer – William Galen – was trying as hard as he could to round these war criminals up and bring them to justice. It was “spy versus spy” in Rome in these post-war days. So, those were amazing stories that he was able to relate to me.

You track down these people, and if they are no longer living, you talk to their family members. Then, there are also the written records: the journals and the diaries that some of these people kept. For example, Dulles’s own wife and his mistress, Mary Bancroft [kept records] – those were fascinating too, and are available in the library.

You try to build this composite portrait from many different pieces of evidence you accumulate. Then, what you’re trying to do is tell the best story, in a way. I have a saying that the best story wins.

I have been, through my exhaustive work on this, which started back with my first book “Brothers: The Hidden History of the Kennedy Years,” examining this swath of history for 10 years. At the end of the day, you want to put together a story that is meaningful, has the ring of truth to it, and help people see American history in a way that they’ve never done before. I am not interested in recycling the same old fairy tales that you see on PBS, or that you see in best-selling history books, Spielberg or Tom Hanks movies. Those are the stories that are meant to put Americans to sleep and not wake them up. I’m interested in waking people up, and I think this book is going to do that. I think it is going to shock people; I think it will be controversial; I think it will be attacked. But, this is what I want. I want to start a debate.

One of the most common responses to any JFK conspiracy is the idea that if the CIA was really involved, the media would have broken the story by now. You do a great job of baking a rebuttal into your story, by showing cold, hard evidence that many of the people running the pre-Internet corporate media, both TV networks and the most influential newspapers and magazines of the day, were either friends with Dulles, scared of Dulles or submissive to the power he wielded. You even give examples of letters from Dulles to executives offering suggestions of how they should be covering stories and their sycophantic responses. How was Dulles so effective in controlling the narrative around JFK’s death and so many other events?

I think the elite world in America was a very small and circumscribed one. We’re talking about a network that the sociologist C. Wright Mills [exposed] because he was one of the first who was trying to understand how power really worked in America. But that world he was writing about was a fairly small group of men, including Wall Street bankers and lawyers and people who held prominent positions in Washington and national security. They all tended to know each other. They all belonged to the same clubs and organizations. They all traded jobs and positions and hired each other. Their children went to the same universities and prep schools. They socialized together.

That was a tight world and Dulles was on personal basis with many, if not most, of the heads of the top media corporations. He was close to the people who owned and ran The New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek, and Henry Luce’s Time empire. He was particularly close to both Henry Luce and his wife; in fact, he was probably having an affair with Claire Luce. So, he could call up and say, “Well, we don’t like what this correspondent is writing about down in Guatemala. We think you should remove him.” And they did.

There was a sense that we were all in this together. It wasn’t just one friend doing a favor for another. The Cold War ideology was so strong, and the sense that this is a national emergency, so this was your patriarchal duty to help out the CIA and its battle with world communism. And so, many reporters willingly did the bidding of the CIA, providing them with information when they were posted overseas or writing stories that CIA wanted them to write.

This was not unusual. Later, it was exposed – much of this by Carl Bernstein in a famous investigative piece that he wrote in the Rolling Stone in the 1970s. It shocked a lot of people. He named names of hundreds people who were on the CIA payrolls in the media or were CIA assets. But, at the time, it wasn’t shocking. Most people would’ve felt that there was a natural alliance between the national security agencies and the media because we were in this international struggle together.

Maybe, it’s not so shocking to people today because essentially you find the same merger of consciousness around the war on terror. There’s so much that goes unreported or that is overworked. When you think of everything that has been done in the name of American people or the war on terror, there has been some good investigative reporting, but by and large, the war on terror gets fundamental support from corporate media. It was the same if not more so during the Cold War. People thought if there was something going on in the Kennedy assassination, they would’ve dug it out. That is just wishful thinking because there was no kind of enterprise reporting on the Warren Commission, on the assassination, on the investigation into the assassination. Any effort in that regard was termed wild, crazy, and outside the parameters of what was legitimate journalism

And in some ways, it still is.

Absolutely. Even now, this book, my reputation, and the early reviews it’s getting should make this book, at least, the kind of book that gets prominent treatment in the media, even if it criticized. There have been a couple of shows already – I won’t say their names – who said that they don’t want to have me on because the book says that the JFK assassination was an inside job. So, there is still a fear of this, a fear of looking at it with an open mind.

America media, if anything, has become even more cowardly in some ways of criticizing the national security state. The national security state is much more powerful today than it was even under Dulles. A lot of the things we are grappling with today such as extraordinary rendition, torture, mass surveillance of private citizens, extra-legal assassinations, those all were developed under Dulles. To thoroughly and honestly analyze Dulles’s legacy, in some ways, is to analyze the current state of national security in America and how it undermines democracy. In some way, to really grapple with what is in my book is not just to grapple with history. It is to grapple with our current problems, and that is really frightening.

One of the major questions that this book raises is: how powerful is the president? Eisenhower famously warned of the rise of the military-industrial complex during his farewell speech and it would certainly appear as though his most dire predictions came true. Obama is the perfect example of how even a candidate with strong progressive credentials can be corrupted so quickly and thoroughly once in office…

In democracy, you would want to think that your president, elected by the people, who is the commander and chief, is in charge. One of the great revelations for me has been how every president, one way or another, has been played by or manipulated by or fooled by their national security officials. And that goes back to Eisenhower.

Even before Eisenhower, there was the famous memo from John Foster Dulles to his corporate clients of [the law firm] Sullivan and Cromwell. Regarding the implementation of Roosevelt’s New Deal, he wrote, “Do not comply. Resist the law with everything in your might and everything will be alright.”

Yes, that was when John Foster Dulles was running a powerful law firm on Wall Street, so he wasn’t in government at that point. But, even when presidents like Eisenhower issued these defiant statements about the military-industrial complex, and the power that the security agencies have… that was a convenient time for him to say that. First of all, he was leaving office. The fact is that Eisenhower allowed that military-industrial-intelligence complex to grow to frightening proportions, and he never directly confronted the power of Dulles and the generals. Or he didn’t do so in an effective way. And he left this, a growing monster, to a young president: John F. Kennedy. When Kennedy did try to deal with – I think he was the last president to confront the frightening power of the security agencies – we know what happened as a result. I think he was killed for that reason.

People can read the book and make their own decisions, but the fact is that ever since Kennedy, no president has seriously challenged the growing power of the national security state. Even Kennedy, who was standing up to them again and again, was often unable to be effective.

At one point, right on the heels of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, suddenly [French] President de Gaulle, an ally, is under siege from his own generals, who were rebelling in Algeria because he was trying to bring the bloody colonial war in Algeria to a close. The French generals, who are in open revolt, are about to descend on Paris. De Gaulle has to go on national television and issue a call to the people of France to aid him to push back this attempted coup. He tells the press and his information ministers that the CIA is behind the coup – and that JFK is not behind it, but JFK is not in control of his own government. So, the CIA tried to overthrow a western ally without the support of the president.

De Gaulle later said that he believed that some of the same U.S. security forces who had targeted him were responsible for Kennedy’s death, and that’s one of those stories that never make it to the American press.

Yes, after de Gaulle came back from Kennedy’s funeral, he told his information ministers that the same U.S. security forces that had targeted him or tried to overthrow his government were responsible for killing President Kennedy, and that Oswald was a convenient fall guy, patsy, scapegoat, and that American people didn’t want to know the truth and will never find out the truth. Unfortunately, that all came out to be [true]. That statement that de Gaulle gave to his information minister was published in the minister’s memoir years later. When that came out in France, it was never translated; it was never published in the US; and no one really publicized it at all in this country. That’s why history is so selective; history is an ongoing argument. You do need to bring an investigative journalist sensibility to history often to get to the truth.

Do you think we are as close as we’ll ever get to understanding what happened with JFK’s assassination, at least in our lifetime? Or do you think there is something that could dispel any doubt about the CIA’s involvement or some of the missing pieces that there isn’t a smoking gun for?

If there was ever a smoking gun, it was probably burned by the CIA long ago. But that said, I do think these 15,000 documents that the CIA is withholding – and they’re withholding them for a reason because they don’t want people to see them – have to do with some of the key CIA officers involved in Allen Dulles’s assassination apparatus, the apparatus which he used against foreign leaders. For any of those violent, particularly lethal men to be connected to Dallas – I have an eye-witness that pinpoints one of these men, William Harvey, on a plane to Dallas, shortly before the assassination. He was spotted by his own deputy. And his deputy told his children years later that was convinced that William Harvey was involved in the assassination of Kennedy. This was the guy who was responsible for the assassination operation aimed at Fidel Castro. He was working with the mafia to kill Castro. He was a notorious figure in the CIA. So, for him to be flying to Dallas, shortly before the assassination, at least raises some serious questions.

Among the documents that the CIA continues to withhold in defiance of the JFK Records of Review Act, are documents related to William Harvey, his whereabouts, and his travel records. So, that’s the kind of information that we need to force the CIA to release in compliance with the law. And the only way they’ll do that is if there is enough outcry from the public and political pressure. There was that kind of pressure after Oliver Stone’s film, back in the 1993. Of course, Oliver Stone got all sorts of holy hell from the media, for being a nut and a conspiracy freak. To this day, Oliver is traumatized by the kind of treatment he got then.

Speaking of Hollywood, one of thing we talked about [previously] was how when you were researching your book and learning about Dulles, you couldn’t help but think of comparisons to Lannisters from “Game of Thrones.” Do you think there is any chance that “The Devil’s Chessboard” could be adapted into a movie or TV series?

I don’t think there is a realistic chance that the main studios/players/network in Hollywood will produce a movie based on this book, and I’ll tell you why. I had the same experience with my earlier book, which looked at Bobby Kennedy’s search for truth into the assassination of his brother. It was optioned by Lionsgate and it came close to being set up as a TV miniseries or movie in several different places, but at the last minute, people got cold feet and shied away from it.

So far, I’ve had the exact same experience with “The Devil’s Chessboard.” Two major agencies have been representing the book in Hollywood. There was huge initial interest from all major players including Brad Pitt and George Clooney, and many others. The books circulated like hot cakes this summer as soon as it came out in galleys and I think as they read it and realized what was in it, despite what a dramatic narrative it is and despite how “House of Cards” showed that there is a huge public appetite for the dark side of power, this is too dark and scary for them.

George Clooney, in particular, was the first person to read it. It was rushed over to him by his agent the first weekend it came out… and he freaked out. These people have already seen Oliver Stone get “Oliver Stoned.”
I think no one in Hollywood will go near this. George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, the people who do American history, are more about mythologizing American history. They’re not about, as Joan Dulles told me, getting to and understanding the dark side. They’re dealing in fairy tales.

Biometric Trends Spreading Worldwide
The surveillence trap is going catching on and going global.

October 26, 2015

By Tom Olago

In our earlier banking days, for secure proof of identity we initially had simple signature verifications and identity cards with photo identification.

As we moved away from banking visits and teller counters, we transitioned towards passwords/PINs for mobile payments and online banking.

Today, we are well into the next phase in personal identification and verification technologies: biometrics.

Biometric I.D trends are catching on fast across the world, especially in sensitive or globally coordinated financial, banking, medical and security systems.

What’s currently ‘en vogue’ are iris and retina recognition systems, DNA matching, facial recognition, fingerprinting, vein pattern recognition and voice recognition.

Even body odor and physical gait (walking patterns), are said to provide unique and effective identification clues. Perhaps we will be getting more sniffs than body checks from officers at security checkpoints in the coming days…

All these biometric options are spreading into regular use globally. Here are but several examples:

The Royal Thai Police will soon introduce biometric technology at immigration checkpoints across the country to help officials screen criminals and people who could pose security risks to the country by entering the country illegally.

This will entail using facial patterns and fingerprints, as human traffickers, illegal migrants and other criminals have previously entered the country posing as tourists, but with either fake or stolen passports, or authentic passports with tampered photos.

Thailand will then join Malaysia and Singapore in the Southeast Asian region countries that implement the technology to help vet travelers at immigration checkpoints.

In Africa over 20 million customers have been enrolled by Nigerian banks in an ongoing government biometrics initiative that links unique identity records with banking systems.

India will soon require residents to have biometric IDs in order to collect government benefits, setting a target of 1 billion enrollments by the end of 2015.

Referred to as the Aadhaar number, this 12-digit number requires the collection of 10 fingerprints, iris scans and other information such as the name, date of birth and address of the individual. It has been criticized by a number of privacy groups who are concerned that the data could be misused by the government.

Australia recently announced that the federal government would spend $18.5m to develop the national facial biometric matching capability, known simply as “the capability”. What is interesting about the Australian system is the comment from government officials that they may pull photos from social media sites to generate the new database.

According to a recent report, Canada’s RBC (Royal Bank) company became the first Canadian firm to implement technology to identify a client's 'voiceprint', which consists of more than 100 different characteristics such as the client's pitch and accent, in the course of a regular conversation.

Phone passwords and security questions could soon become obsolete as financial institutions race to implement technology that can verify a client's identity based on the characteristics of their voice, which cannot be stolen.

The fear of one's identity being stolen is driving a large part of the general population to become more and more accepting of biometric identity. With every new hack attack, public support will grow.

The trap is being set.

The UN Plans To Implement Universal Biometric Identification For All Of Humanity By 2030

November 03, 2015

Michael Snyder / Economic Collapse Blog

Did you know that the United Nations intends to have biometric identification cards in the hands of every single man, woman and child on the entire planet by the year 2030? And did you know that a central database in Geneva, Switzerland will be collecting data from many of these cards?

Previously, I have written about the 17 new “Global Goals” that the UN launched at the end of September. Even after writing several articles about these new Global Goals, I still don’t think that most of my readers really grasp how insidious they actually are.

This new agenda truly is a template for a “New World Order”, and if you dig into the sub-points for these new Global Goals you find some very alarming things.

For example, Goal 16.9 sets the following target…

“By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration”

The United Nations is already working hard toward the implementation of this goal – particularly among refugee populations. The UN has partnered with Accenture to implement a biometric identification system that reports information “back to a central database in Geneva”. The following is an excerpt from an article that was posted on findbiometrics.com…

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is moving forward with its plans to use biometric technology to identify and track refugees, and has selected a vendor for the project. Accenture, an international technology services provider, has won out in the competitive tendering process and will oversee the implementation of the technology in a three-year contract.

The UNHCR will use Accenture’s Biometric Identity Management System (BIMS) for the endeavor. BIMS can be used to collect facial, iris, and fingerprint biometric data, and will also be used to provide many refugees with their only form of official documentation. The system will work in conjunction with Accenture’s Unique Identity Service Platform (UISP) to send this information back to a central database in Geneva, allowing UNHCR offices all over the world to effectively coordinate with the central UNHCR authority in tracking refugees.

I don’t know about you, but that sure does sound creepy to me.

And these new biometric identification cards will not just be for refugees. According to a different FindBiometrics report, authorities hope this technology will enable them to achieve the UN’s goal of having this kind of identification in the hands of every man, woman and child on the planet by the year 2030…

A report synopsis notes that about 1.8 billion adults around the world currently lack any kind of official documentation. That can exclude those individuals from access to essential services, and can also cause serious difficulties when it comes to trans-border identification.

That problem is one that Accenture has been tackling in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which has been issuing Accenture-developed biometric identity cards to populations of displaced persons in refugee camps in Thailand, South Sudan, and elsewhere. The ID cards are important for helping to ensure that refugees can have access to services, and for keeping track of refugee populations.

Moreover, the nature of the deployments has required an economically feasible solution, and has demonstrated that reliable, biometric ID cards can affordably be used on a large scale. It offers hope for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of getting legal ID into the hands of everyone in the world by the year 2030 with its Identification for Development (ID4D) initiative.

The Identification for Development (ID4D) initiative was originally launched by the World Bank, and they are proud to be working side by side with the UN to get “legal identity” into the hands of all. The following comes from the official website of the World Bank…

Providing legal identity for all (including birth registration) by 2030 is a target shared by the international community as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (target 16.9). The World Bank Group (WBG) has launched the Identification for Development (ID4D) cross-practice initiative, with the participation of seven GP/CCSAs sharing the same vision and strategic objectives, to help our client countries achieve this goal and with the vision of making everyone count: ensure a unique legal identity and enable digital ID-based services to all.

Of course all of this is being framed as a “humanitarian” venture right now, but will it always stay that way?

At some point will a universal biometric ID be required for everyone, including you and your family?

And what would happen if you refused to take it?

I could definitely foresee a day when not having “legal identification” would disqualify you from holding a job, getting a new bank account, applying for a credit card, qualifying for a mortgage, receiving any form of government payments, etc. etc.

At that point, anyone that refused to take a “universal ID” would become an outcast from society.

What the elite want to do is to make sure that everyone is “in the system”. And it is a system that they control and that they manipulate for their own purposes. That is one of the reasons why they are slowly but surely discouraging the use of cash all over the world.

In Sweden, this movement has already become so advanced that they are now pulling ATMs out of even the most rural locations…

The Swedish government abetted by its fractional-reserve banking system is moving relentlessly toward a completely cashless economy. Swedish banks have begun removing ATMs even in remote rural areas, and according to Credit Suisse the rule of thumb in Scandinavia is “If you have to pay in cash, something is wrong.”

Since 2009 the average annual value of notes and coins in circulation in Sweden has fallen more than 20 percent from over 100 billion to 80 billion kronor. What is driving this movement to destroy cash is the desire to unleash the Swedish central bank to drive the interest rate down even further into negative territory.

Currently, it stands at -0.35 percent, but the banks have not passed this along to their depositors, because depositors would simply withdraw their cash rather than leave it in banks and watch its amount shrink inexorably toward zero.

However, if cash were abolished and bank deposits were the only form of money, well then there would be no limit on negative interest rate policy as banks would be able to pass these negative interest rates onto their depositors without adverse consequences.

With everyone’s wages, salaries, dividends etc, paid by direct deposit into his bank account, the only way to escape negative interest rates would be to spend, spend, spend.

This, of course, is precisely what the Keynesian economists advising governments and running central banks are aiming at….a pro-cash resistance movement is beginning to coalesce and the head of a security industry lobbying group relates, “I’ve heard of people keeping cash in their microwaves because banks won’t accept it.”

If you aren’t using cash, that means that all of your economic activity is going through the banks where it can be watched, tracked, monitored and regulated.

Every time the elite propose something for our “good”, it somehow always results in them having more power and more control.

I hope that people will wake up and see what is happening. Major moves toward a one world system are taking place right in front of our eyes, and yet I hear very, very few people talking about any of this.

The trap is getting closer to being set.

(NaturalNews) Most Americans are too busy to pay attention to the United Nations, let alone the actions of their own government. This is unfortunate considering the fact that the place is run by representatives of vile, authoritarian regimes that are always looking for ways to control their respective populations as well as those of other countries.

Many of these efforts are embodied broadly under an initiative known as Agenda 21, which was further exposed recently during a speech by Pope Francis. In an encyclical released over the summer, the pontiff lamented about environmental issues and concentration of wealth in too few hands in a document that actually reads more like a globalist political manifesto than a religious or scientific offering.

At the time, we provided some definition and detail into Agenda 21. Pushed by the United Nations, the agenda consists of a bevy of proposed regulations that have been years in the making and essentially strip individuals of their freedom while asserting centralized control over private property. The provisions amount to population control and reduction in certain areas deemed ripe for "sustainability"; control over local and national economies via the regulation of carbon emissions and other mechanisms of pollutants; and globalized central control over the financial decisions of businesses and especially landowners.

Chipping the global population
Now, as reported by Michael Snyder at Blacklisted News, the UN wants to essentially microchip everyone on the planet so that global elitist "managers" can track us all 24/7/365 by 2030, which is when the elitists undoubtedly believe they will have sufficiently pacified the populace.

Snyder drew in part upon a previous post of his at The Economic Collapse Blog where he discussed 17 new "Global Goals" adopted by UN representatives in late September.

Among those goals is this nugget: "By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration." [See it here and click on item 16, then view the drop-down menu].

"The United Nations is already working hard toward the implementation of this goal – particularly among refugee populations," Snyder writes. "The UN has partnered with Accenture to implement a biometric identification system that reports information 'back to a central database in Geneva.'"

Snyder referenced a piece posted at Find Biometrics, a "global identity management" firm, which states:

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is moving forward with its plans to use biometric technology to identify and track refugees, and has selected a vendor for the project. Accenture, an international technology services provider, has won out in the competitive tendering process and will oversee the implementation of the technology in a three-year contract.

Snyder points out that according to additional information published by Find Biometrics, the technology will be utilized by the UN to eventually encompass every man, woman and child on the planet – not just refugees.

They're taking the world for themselves, and that means taking it away from you
He also notes that none of the language being used by the planetary masterminds is selected at random. We are referred referred to by the UN and many governments as "global citizens"; our economies are becoming more and more integrated (hence the new Trans-Pacific Partnership – the latest effort to advance economic "globalization"); and the tnternet has created global interconnectivity.

Even worse, Americans – the most "independent" of all people – are going along with it.

"Decades ago, most Americans would have been up in arms over something like this," Snyder writes. "But now most people just seem to accept these changes passively. Very powerful secret societies and international organizations have been moving us in this direction for a very long time, and most Americans simply have no idea what is happening."

Much of our inattention can be blamed on other factors. For one, tens of millions of people are distracted because they are trying to eke out a living; others choose to be distracted, spending more time paying attention to what Hollywood is doing or what friends are saying on social media.

Meanwhile, the world is being shaped by the elite, which primarily involves taking it away from – and then managing – you.

When I stole a car and took off to the Yukon many decades ago for an amazing adventure it was during a window of opportunity I suppose and I highly doubt that it could be pulled off today. Especially with this new technology.

I remember when that came out, it scans all the plates it passes, and instantly comes up with flags for violations, stolen cars, and warrants.
It is evasive tech for sure, but does some good.
I hate all the nanny state stuff, don't get me wrong, but the plates are in public.

It's Now Mandatory To Microchip Your Dog In The United Kingdom. Are Humans Next?

If it's such good idea, why must it be mandatory? The government in the United Kingdom has just claimed further ownership of your dog.

In a new law, the Crown has granted her subjects the privilege to own a dog but only if the beast is microchipped. That's right, microchipping dogs is now mandatory throughout the United Kingdom.

It began as a voluntary option for monitoring your own pet, but now, dog owners in the U.K. have a just a few weeks to comply; if local authorities catch dogs without a microchip, owners face expensive fines.

BBC reports "Dog owners who have not had their pets microchipped could face a fine of up to £500, as a new law comes into force. All dogs in England, Scotland and Wales are now legally required to have been chipped by the time they are eight weeks old."

"Microchipping our dogs will not only reunite people with their lost or stolen pets, but also help to tackle the growing problem of strays roaming the streets and relieve the burden placed on animal charities and local authorities," Animal Welfare Minister George Eustice said, hoping to appeal to dog lovers.

Owning a domestic dog starts with buying a license from the authoritarians. Then mandatory vaccines and forced sterilization are required in some areas. Leashes and cages are also compulsory in many places. Now they demand a microchip!

It seems like the same path currently being used to domesticate humans. After they mandate everyone get vaccinated, how long before they force humans to get microchipped to help governments and taxpayers save money on security?

The reason given for the mandate is to "tackle reckless ownership and help save councils vast sums of taxpayers' cash looking after strays," according to Simon Blackburn, of the Local Government Association, as quoted by the BBC.

Forcing a mandatory microchip into a sentient being to save money on governing? This is a joke, right? Nope.

I do believe that this surveillance is in preparation for what they have planned. I have a few ideas.

There's No Place To Hide From Surveillance Technology In 2016

Those who read Orwell's 1984 and worry that we may have Big Brother-style surveillance in our near future are not reading the headlines closely enough: We're already there.

We find ourselves now in a surveillance state brought about by the ever-presence of modern technology, new precedents in what the government is allowed to track, corporate interests and even the tendency to overshare on social media. Indeed, more than a few convictions have been won through investigation into a person's phone records, including text conversations and GPS histories.

Liking and sharing on Facebook articles that are regarded as subversive may be enough to get you flagged for a watch list. If this sounds like a paranoid conspiracy theory, then consider what retired NYPD detective Patrick J. Brosnan recently suggested to WPIX news, that a smartphone is a combination "homing device" and "confession," citing that there have been several cases where "...information obtained from the phone, established innocence or guilt."

The silver living may be in the first half of that statement, that phone records have been used to establish innocence. It's difficult to build a case that a suspect was at the scene of a serious crime when their phone records say otherwise.

But how long until you let slip that you may have made a mistake in filing your taxes? Or that you let a friend have a glass of wine without knowing that they were under 21? Suppose you visit a relative that the police are keeping tabs on for suspicion of drug distribution. If you think that you have nothing to hide, you're probably wrong.

The Washington Post reports that you may have already been assigned a threat score, rated green, yellow or red. You might wind up with a certain threat score based on a career in the military, posting material on Facebook that could be seen as threatening, suffering from certain medical conditions, or simply being a friend of a friend of a known criminal.

Android users can access Google Location Settings via the settings page and turn Reporting and Location History off and delete their logs, but you have to turn this feature off on every one of your Google accounts.

This is not an "out," however, it is only one small brick in the surveillance wall. If you drive a car, you are subject to automatic license plate reading cameras. If you live in the city, there are sidewalk and public space cameras, not to mention cameras on public transportation. There is tracking for credit cards and rewards cards.

Nielsen is permitted to sell information about your TV viewing habits. Your webcam can be hacked to show what you're doing in the privacy of your home. Web browsing cookies can be used against you. For the most part, your data is only used to decide which advertisements to show you, but it's not at all uncommon for any of these data-collectors to let law enforcement take a look at your information.

Simply put, there is no "off the grid." It is nearly impossible to live a normal life without ever setting foot in a public space and without ever using any sort of technology.

If you're wondering how we might reverse the tide of surveillance, it's simply too late for that. New initiatives towards surveillance passed with little resistance under George W. Bush, given the impact that 9/11 had on American culture, and were expanded upon under Barack Obama.

There have been some small efforts to combat omnipotent surveillance, such as the end of the Patriot Act, but all that can really be done at this point is to stay in the know. Avoid talking about any sort of illicit or subversive activity in text chats or online, and opt out whenever you can.

This is easier said than done, but: give the government as few reasons as possible to mark you as a threat, because there's no hiding from the surveillance state in 2016.

A the creators of the American Constitution said. Thsoe who would give up their freedoms and liberety for safety do not deserve freedom and liberty. They knew and openly stated that one of the tactics that would eventually be used to take away the freedoms from nations is calling for safety.

Shocking NBC News Report - Someday We Will Be Microchipping All Of Our Children

Would you allow microchips to be surgically implanted in your children if that would keep them safer?

This is already being done to pets on a widespread basis, and a shocking local NBC News report is promoting the idea that if it is good for our pets, then we should be doing it to our children as well.

As you will see below, the report even puts a guilt trip on parents by asking them this question: "How far would you go to keep your children secure?" Of course most parents very much want to keep their children safe, and a microchip would enable authorities to track them down if they were lost or stolen.

But is this really a good idea? And where is all of this technology eventually leading? If you have not seen this very disturbing local NBC News report yet, you can view it right here...

In the video, the reporter says that our children could be implanted with microchips "the size of a grain of rice" and that there would be "little to no health risks" involved.

And near the end of the report, she insists that "we could see those microchips in everyone" eventually.

Wow.

I am speechless.

The report also quoted an electronics expert who claimed that testing of these microchips "is being done right now"...

The piece flips back to pushing the idea when it quotes electronics expert Stuart Lipoff, who asserts that microchipping children is safe and inevitable.

"People should be aware that testing is being done right now. The military is not only testing this out, but already utilizes its properties. It's not a matter of if it will happen, but when," states Lipoff.

Of course if widespread microchipping of the population does start happening, at first it will likely be purely voluntary. But once enough of the population starts adopting the idea, it will be really easy for the government to make it mandatory.

Just imagine a world where physical cash was a thing of the past and you could not buy, sell, get a job or open a bank account without your government-issued microchip identification.

Will you allow yourself and your family to be chipped when that day arrives?

If not, how will you eat?

How will you survive?

What will you do when your children come crying to you for food?

I am certainly not saying that you should allow yourself to be chipped. I know that nobody is ever chipping me. But what I am saying is that people are going to be faced with some absolutely heart-breaking choices.

Just recently, I wrote about a new form of digital currency that is intended to replace the physical dollars that we use now and also replace alternative currencies such as Bitcoin. It was unveiled in front of about 100 top Wall Street executives recently during a secret meeting in New York City. To give you an idea of just how rapidly the concept of a cashless society is advancing, I want to share with you a brief excerpt from an article that I recently wrote about this new technology...

Last month, a "secret meeting" that involved more than 100 executives from some of the biggest financial institutions in the United States was held in New York City. During this "secret meeting", a company known as "Chain" unveiled a technology that transforms U.S. dollars into "pure digital assets". Reportedly, there were representatives from Nasdaq, Citigroup, Visa, Fidelity, Fiserv and Pfizer in the room, and Chain also claims to be partnering with Capital One, State Street, and First Data.

This "revolutionary" technology is intended to completely change the way that we use money, and it would represent a major step toward a cashless society. But if this new digital cash system is going to be so good for society, why was it unveiled during a secret meeting for Wall Street bankers? Is

None of us probably would have ever heard about this secret meeting if it was not for a report in Bloomberg. The following comes from their article entitled "Inside the Secret Meeting Where Wall Street Tested Digital Cash"...

On a recent Monday in April, more than 100 executives from some of the world's largest financial institutions gathered for a private meeting at the Times Square office of Nasdaq Inc. They weren't there to just talk about blockchain, the new technology some predict will transform finance, but to build and experiment with the software.

By the end of the day, they had seen something revolutionary: U.S. dollars transformed into pure digital assets, able to be used to execute and settle a trade instantly. That's the promise of a blockchain, where the cumbersome and error-prone system that takes days to move money across town or around the world is replaced with almost instant certainty.

So it is not just Michael Snyder from The Economic Collapse Blog that is referring to this gathering as a "secret meeting". This is actually how it was described by Bloomberg. And I think that there is a very good reason why this meeting was held in secret, because many in the general public would definitely be alarmed by this giant step toward a cashless society.

Right now, more than 400 billion cashless transactions are conducted around the world each year, and that number is growing very quickly.

And when our system becomes entirely cashless, there will be no more stuffing your mattress with cash and we will all be forced to deal with the banks.

What that day arrives, all of a sudden the government will be able to serve as the gatekeeper for who is allowed to access the system and who is not.

It would be very easy to impose a tax, require some sort of loyalty oath, or mandate some form of microchip identification as a condition for participating in the cashless system.

When we get to that point, what will you do?

In the end, that is something that we all need to be considering very carefully...

I read that yesterday, and thought you have to mark your livestock.

Every law takes away a little bit of freedom. I suspect that they are using chipping livestock in effort to try and make getting chipped seem mundane. You simply would not be able to get off of the grid even if you wanted to.

They will do more than that, they will make people want the chip. Look at the convenience, and time savings, never be without your info, or money.

I wonder if they this was one of the many things planned when they first started the internet ?

Next Wave Of Policing - Predicting Crime Before It Happens

If you have seen the movie, Minority Report, you took in a cinematic glimpse of a possible high-tech future in which crimes are predicted before they actually occur.

Modern day tech gurus, psychologists and security service providers are trying to make such a seemingly futuristic sci-fi capability into our modern day reality.

A team of scientists recently proved that a computer is better at predicting who will perform a violent act than human beings acting as judges. It is enough evidence to warrant extensive research into the technologies that could serve as vitally important pre-crime networks in the future.

The Benefits of Crime Prediction Technology

Cast aside any dystopian doubts you might have about a future society in which crime prevention technology is used and consider the technology's numerous merits for a moment.

Pre-crime technology has the potential to save countless lives. It would also prevent a considerable number of serious injuries. It even has the potential to prevent the unnecessary jailing of the least violent offenders. Yet a good portion of people are still uneasy about letting machines play any role in the fate of human beings.

We currently trust machines for tasks like automated marketing but are we really ready to trust them with even the slightest component of human justice? The truth is that our police forces already lean on such technology to predict where crimes are most likely to occur.

There is even a computer system in use in Fresno, California that predicts the likelihood of someone's potential to commit a crime. Known as Beware, this computer system assigns low, medium and high threat levels to individuals in an effort to gauge each person's danger to society.

Targeted Technology

Today's anti-crime high-tech devices crunch data on already known criminals and other wrongdoers. These systems are not gathering data on innocent, everyday citizens who are out running their errands or going to work.

The only publicly available data is that which is available through arrest records. Today's pre-crime technology is also used to pinpoint which parolees are the most likely to commit another crime. All computers need to create relatively accurate predictions is a pool of data.

It then finds patterns that serve as the foundation for predictions. When authorities relied upon a computer program to determine which half of domestic violence offenders should be released, only ten percent of those released were later arrested for the same crime.

It's a much better rate than that of human judges. About 20 percent of those selected for release by judges proceeded to commit the same crime again in the future. It is clear that computers have a role to play in law enforcement. The question is how much humanity is willing to trust these programs with issues of human justice.

China's Pre-Crime Network

The Chinese government is on the cutting edge of pre-crime technology. It created a 'pre-crime' network that will perform "predictive policing" of its citizen base in hopes of preventing another Tiananmen Square.

The network is expected to function by gathering extensive surveillance data and using artificial intelligence to pinpoint human identities based on facial features. Security camera footage along with an analysis of one's personal characteristics and social ties will help the government identify threats.

No one is fully sure as to when the Chinese government will roll out this groundbreaking pre-crime network but it will certainly be interesting to witness the results. It is anticipated that the government will roll out the technology in select areas where there are hotbeds of anti-government extremism.

The technology's data will add to the already existing Dang'an dossier that the government keeps on almost every citizen to record behaviors and attitudes.

Smart Policing is Here to Stay

There has been plenty of fuss over the new "smart policing" in the United Kingdom as well. These systems have been in development for a number of years.

They rely on data analytics in the context of historic offenses and other aspects of criminal behavior. The systems' end goal is to predict where crimes will happen.

As more laws are passed to allow authorities to access citizens' mental health records, the push for pre-crime technology will only continue to grow. But, there is a very fine line that separates crime prevention from the suppression of legitimate political dissent.
