I shoot Nikon...But I have a Canon SX30 super zoom that I quite like for a casual walk around camera. Unfortunately it runs on AA batteries and it's kind of heavy for it's size. Battery life sucks on it if you do a lot of zooming. I find that it makes you lazy as well. You get caught up on zooming in and out to get the shot right while not really paying attention to composition...At least that's my problem.
I have a 70-300mm and I want to sell it as well, unfortunately there are tons of them out there because they sell them in camera bundles and nobody wants them.... . I've looked at the Sigma lens and I still think I will stick with Nikkor. I have Tamron lens for my old 35mm Pentax super program....I like them, they are well constructed and were reasonably priced.
That bird looks maybe to be a grebe, but I'm not sure since I only saw one a few times on TV years ago.
I think the ones I saw had a stripe around the beak.

I love going to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary
Sandhill crane
I don't know what kind of bird this is
Yes, it's a pricy lens. That's why I haven't bought it yet. I keep hoping someone will be nice to me for Christmas...
Nice pics...animals are fun to shoot and can be a challenge. I'm going to Disney World in spring of 2019 and hope to get some good shots at Animal Kingdom.
These are a few samples from a cruise I was on last January to the Caribbean. We left out of NYC and hit the western Caribbean for 10 days.

The technical stats on the pics got screwed up so pay no attention.

Really gorgeous photos. Wish I can travel a bit. I booked Dec 17th-24th off.
Going anywhere good?
I don't get to travel near as much as I used to. Funds don't allow for it. But that's okay because when I do get to get away,...it's that much more enjoyable.

Not really going anywhere. Lots of Christmas festivities and events to enjoy with family and friends.
Well that's cool...Family and the Holiday's always provide opportunities for decent picture taking.

I saw a photo of a similar bird that someone took and he called it American Coot.
There have been sightings of a male Mandarin Duck here. People are freaking out because it's a rare bird in North America. The Mandarin duck is native to East Asia. I photographed this last summer. Kinda look like a female Mandarin duck.
The male Mandarin duck that everybody are wanting to photograph is a male that look like the wood duck. I would love to photograph it.
I just got back from the lake. The amount of clueless photographers who thought the everyday wood duck was the mandarin duck astonishes me. There was this lady who was happily showing me photos of the wood duck who she thought was the mandarin duck. I didn't want to tell her that it was the wood duck to ruin her day. Another photographer was fairly sure that it was the mandarin duck until I googled and showed him pictures of the wood duck on my phone. The infamous mandarin duck was nowhere to be found at the lake today.
I would be happy to just take them of the wood ducks beautiful birds.
I used to know a man who carved them out of wood, he made them look real, he died a while back though.
