I wish i had the equipment, and stuff to catch some, and make some sculptures with it :)
Back in the early 80s i watched an artiest on tv that used lava to make stuff with it, it looked really nice.

Etna is more the kind of volcano that blast, and pours out, there are other types like in Hawaii that just flows out, and others like Krakatoa that blow up. I believe Mt Hood is a Blow up kind, St, Helen also.
All dangerous, but some catastrophic.

At least we live in interesting times. Has Mount Saint Helens been acting up lately too ?

Is Something Strange Happening Inside The Earth?

Why are "giant fountains of lava" suddenly pouring out of some of the most dangerous volcanoes on the entire planet, and why are so many long dormant volcanoes suddenly roaring back to life?

The spectacular eruption of Mt. Etna in Italy is making headlines all over the world, but it is far from alone.

According to Volcano Discovery, 35 major volcanoes either are erupting right now or have just recently erupted, and dozens of others are stirring.

So what is causing this upsurge in volcanic activity? Is something strange happening inside the Earth?

According to the USGS, magma is "molten rock underground", and lava is molten rock "that breaks through the Earth's surface".

Right now, something is pushing magma up through the crust of the Earth at a number of key spots around the planet. On the island of Sicily, the "giant fountains of lava" that are coming out of Mt. Etna can be seen 30 kilometers away...

Giant fountains of lava could be seen sprouting from the volcano, located on the isle of Sicily, as far away as Catania, around 30 kilometres away, and the resort town of Taormina.

The Meteorological Observatory in Nunziata said: "You can clearly see the lava fountains, although currently modest, as it escapes from the crater in the southeast."

An orange air alert has been issued, meaning that airspace will remain open but authorities will continue to monitor the situation.

On the other side of the world, a constant stream of molten rock has been springing out of Guatemala's "Volcano of Fire" since February 25th...

Guatemala's Volcano of Fire erupted Saturday (Feb 25), spewing lava and sending up plumes of ash that rained down on nearby communities and could eventually reach the capital, civil protection authorities said.

The Volcan de Fuego, one of the country's three active volcanoes, is located about 45km southwest of the capital Guatemala City. It was the volcano's second eruption this year.

And in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a "firehose of lava" has been pouring out of the Kilauea Volcano since December 31st.

Meanwhile, a number of large volcanoes that have been dormant for a very long time all over the world have started springing back to life.

For instance, the only active volcano in India has suddenly started "spewing lava and ash" after being silent for 150 years...

Barren Islands volcano, India's only active volcano, is reportedly spewing lava and ash after a gap of 150 years. It erupted for about four hours in January, scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) claimed.

The volcano is situated in Barren Islands in the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago. Some unsubstantiated reports even claim that it is South Asia's only active volcano.

Its first recorded eruption dates back to 1787. Since then, the volcano has erupted more than ten times, including the one this year.

At one time scientists would speak of "dead volcanoes", but now we learning that it really isn't safe to speak of any volcano as being completely "dead".

So many of these long dormant volcanoes are roaring back to life, and why this is suddenly happening now is puzzling many of the experts.

And as you have seen, this isn't isolated to just one or two geographic regions. It literally is happening all over the globe.

Last month, Indonesia's Mount Sinabung in the southern hemisphere erupted seven times in the space of a single day, and meanwhile authorities in the northern hemisphere were warning us that four of Iceland's biggest volcanoes are preparing to erupt.

Indonesia and Iceland are about as far apart as you can get, and yet they are both being affected by this worldwide phenomenon.

Without a doubt, something definitely appears to be causing a significant increase in worldwide seismic activity.

Let's talk about earthquakes for a moment. A website known as the Big Wobble recently published an article that included two extraordinary maps.

The first map showed the number of major earthquakes from January 1900 to January 1917, and the second map showed the number of major earthquakes from January 2000 to January 2017.

The difference between the two maps was startling to say the least.

It is becoming extremely difficult to deny that something is happening to the crust of our planet, and many are becoming concerned about what we could soon experience if the level of seismic activity continues to rise.

We already talked about Mt. Etna, but a much greater threat in Italy appears to be awakening under the city of Naples. A massive supervolcano known as "Campi Flegrei" is close to a "critical state", and if it erupts the consequences will be beyond catastrophic. The following comes from National Geographic...

A long-quiet yet huge supervolcano that lies under 500,000 people in Italy may be waking up and approaching a "critical state," scientists report this week in the journal Nature Communications.

Based on physical measurements and computer modeling, "we propose that magma could be approaching the CDP [critical degassing pressure] at Campi Flegrei, a volcano in the metropolitan area of Naples, one of the most densely inhabited areas in the world, and where accelerating deformation and heating are currently being observed," wrote the scientists--who are led by Giovanni Chiodini of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics in Rome.

If that supervolcano were to fully erupt, millions could die, the skies in the northern hemisphere would be darkened for months and the resulting "volcanic winter" would cause famines all around the globe.

And the same things could be said about the supervolcano that is awakening in North Korea too.

In the United States, we should be watching the volcanoes on the west coast for signs of trouble, and my regular readers know that I am particularly concerned about Mt. Rainier.

Someday Mt. Rainier will erupt, and the horror that this will mean for the Northwest is beyond anything that I could put into words for you right now.

We live at a time when our planet is becoming increasingly unstable, and a major natural disaster could change all of our lives in a single moment.

Just because our lives have been somewhat "normal" for an extended period of time does not mean that they will always be this way, and those that are ignoring the rumblings of our planet do so at their own peril.

Land is always moving, and swelling, and residing so might be time to let off some pressure. I sure hope we never see a super volcano eruption, or a traps type/flood basalt.

A Massive Lake Of Molten Carbon The Size Of Mexico Was Just Discovered Under The US

A recent scientific discovery has drastically changed our view of the global carbon cycle and identified a new significant risk. Researchers have discovered a giant lake or reservoir made up of molten carbon sitting below the western US.

The molten carbon (primarily in the form of carbonate) reservoir could drastically and immediately change the global climate for over a decade if it were to be released. Thankfully there is little risk in the near future of this happening. The carbon sits 217 miles beneath the surface of the Earth in the upper mantle and has no immediate pathway to the surface. In total the lake covers approximately 700,000 square miles, approximately the size of Mexico. This has redefined how much carbon scientists believe sits locked away in the Earth’s mantle and its interaction with surface and atmospheric carbon.

Geologists at Royal Holloway University of London were able to use the largest array of seismic sensors in the world to detect what exists below the surface of the western US. In total 538 sensors were used to create a three-dimensional view of the regions subsurface. They do this by measuring the time it takes for sound waves to travel into the Earth and bounce back. Depending on the structure of rock in the subsurface, different waves will bounce back at different times and at different angles. Complex algorithms integrate the data to reveal a picture of what exists below the surface of the Earth. Scientists are limited to viewing the molten lake through seismic imagery as it is far too deep to reach via a drill bit.

You may be asking why and how this lake of molten carbonate exists in the first place. It is a result of the Pacific Plate subducting underneath the North American Plate. As the Pacific Plate subducts, it experiences increasingly high pressures and temperatures. This, combined with the presence of gasses such as CO2 and water locked away in the rock, allows for partial melting of the plate. This is a similar process by which the Rockies Mountains formed in the western US. For a more in depth review, this is a great explanation.

Columbia.edu
Schematic of a subduction zone whereby the subducting plate [+]
melts, causing volcanism at the surface.

The molten carbonate sits beneath Yellowstone National Park, which in and of itself is a super volcano with the power of a massive eruption. The last major eruption was 640,000 years ago at Yellowstone, however if the super volcano did erupt it could cause the US to go into a nuclear winter. The eruption, when it does occur, would be on the order of 1,000 times more powerful than the 1980′s Mount St. Helens eruption.

In part due to this research, scientists now believe the Earth’s upper mantle may hold up to 100 trillion metric tons of carbon. To put this into perspective, the US EPA estimated that in total 10 billion metric tons of carbon was emitted in 2011, or approximately 0.01% of the carbon sitting in Earth’s mantle. Thankfully the release of the mantle’s carbon happens very slowly over time primarily through volcanic eruptions. However, paleoclimatic fluctuations in CO2, creating ice ages and greenhouse global conditions are partially linked to dynamic changes in volcanism.

The molten carbonate through thermal decomposition would release carbon dioxide and calcium oxide, however it would need a viable pathway to Earth’s surface to inject the CO2 into the atmosphere

Release of just 1 percent of the mantle’s carbon would equate to burning 2.3 trillion barrels of oil. This gives some perspective on just how important it is to understand this deep carbon system and how it interacts with and drives the atmospheric carbon system driving climate change.

I imagine that if China and Russia have their own HAARP[s] or some other kind of earthquake machine then they may have plans to use them to set off Yellowstone if war with the west ever broke out.

It would destroy most the US, but the thing is if, and when it goes off the starvation, and cold around the world would kill billions. Also the winter would last for years, and maybe cause an Ice age.

I wonder if these mini quakes have nudges that two faults off of Vancouver Island closer to erupting ? Is this a sign that one or more of these faults will finally shift ?If so then this is a good time to not be by the coast.

18 earthquakes have hit the Seattle area in the last 24 hours – 40 tremors last week

Seattle-area is currently hit by a small earthquake swarm with 18 tremors reported in 24 hours.

About 40 tremors have been recorded in the last week.

Did you feel the swarm? After two earthquakes early Thursday near Bremerton in the Kitsap Peninsula – M3.5 and M2.6 – , another M3.4 quake off Whidbey Island was reported by more than 700 people to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and rattled homes from Vashon Island to Bellevue to Lynnwood.

The earthquakes were the latest in a series of 18 tremors that have have hit the Seattle area in the last 24 hours. None had a magnitude greater than 3.6. Moreover, 40 tremors have been recorded in the last week in the same area.

The tremors are striking along the Seattle fault, which runs from Sammamish, through Bellevue, the southern edge of Seattle, and on to Bremerton.

According to seismologists, it is likely the Seattle swarm will end soon. Moreover, there is no reason to believe the Bremerton swarm would trigger the Whidbey earthquake, 50 kilometers away. A coincidence?

Little quakes are usually a good thing, at least the pressure is letting off.

Yellowstone ‘supervolcano’ hit with over 400 earthquakes

The supervolcano at Yellowstone National Park has been hit with more than 400 earthquakes since June 12. Researchers say it’s nothing to be
https://nypost.com/2017/06/22/yellowsto ... =flipboard
alarmed about, though.

In a statement to the Star Valley Independent, scientists from the University of Utah — which monitors the volcano — said the earthquake swarms are nothing new.

“This is the highest number of earthquakes at Yellowstone within a single week in the past five years, but is fewer than weekly counts during similar earthquakes swarms in 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010,” scientists explained.

The largest quake in the swarm hit was recorded on June 15, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake, according to the statement issued June 19. At that time, 464 events had been recorded since June 12.

The researchers noted that the sequence of tremors has had approximately 30 earthquakes that are a magnitude of 2 and larger and four quakes of magnitude 3 and larger.

“Earthquake swarms are common in Yellowstone and, on average, comprise about 50 percent of the total seismicity in the Yellowstone region,” the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) said in a statement on its website. “UUSS will continue to monitor this swarm and will provide updates as necessary.”

Though experts at the US Geological Survey (USGS) say the risk of the Yellowstone supervolcano erupting is quite low (the probability is one in 730,000,) it may erupt again in the future.

There have been three major “caldera-forming eruptions” in Yellowstone in the last 2.1 million years, the last occurring 640,000 years ago. Since then, there have been a number of smaller erurptions, with the last one emitting rhyolite lava, causing the Pitchstone Plateau flow some 70,000 years ago, the UUSS wrote on its website.

I have wondered that if the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts would it be so devastating that the USA could not defend itself. If so would Americans jump at the chance to invade ?

my guess is it wouldn't matter for most, it would wipe out most of America, and later a lot of the world would starve, and freeze.

Yellowstone is such an amazing place as it is. The destruction of that park by it erupting would be a huge loss by itself. The damage it would do would be ginormous.

The after effects is the issue, if a large enough eruption there could be a long winter ahead for a few years. Starvation, and collapse of many countries might happen.

I was shown the math by a farmer that the midwest of Canada and the USA has enough farmland to feed the world. Yellowstone would very possibly wipe out almost all of that farmland.
