One story a son of a British soldier told me of an ancestor of his who fought in the WW1. His relative if not ancestor's job at the Somme was to go out into no mans land at night and kill the mortally wounded. If this went on at Vimy Pierre Berton didn't know or most likely wasn't going to tell.

This Mata Hari must have had a femininity and charm that was irresistable. I have read some evidence years ago that she actually was probably not a spy. She however wasn't catholic and I believe jealousy was largely to do with her untimely death.

Unfortunately I don't have time now to watch this movie but I will be back to see it. It looks good so far. Daniel Craig [ James Bond ] wouldn't star in a shabby movie.

Good find, it makes me sad though seeing the young boys in it knowing so many died for nothing back then.
The horror has much been forgotten.

Well that was a movie well worth watching. I believe that it is a safe bet that they had some PHD historians aiding them on the realism. My grandfather lied about his age to be there. So many good kids died. I know one fellow whose family has a long military tradition who told me of one of his anceestors who had the job on the Somme of going into no mans land at night and putting the wounded out of their misery ..friend and foe alike.

That job was uncalled for, the opposing armies should have had an agreement to collect the wounded, or dying.
I really respect the men who fought, but their leaders is who should have died.

I watched War Horse when it was in the theaters. It was so good. I had to go to the washroom and then went and saw it again so that I could see what I had missed. It is a great movie. Steven Spielberg I believe did a great job as he always does of putting the watcher in that particular era.

if you can watch that it's well worth it, It was a good video on the subject.
it's sad though, many of the horses was just turned to food after the war when they had a big part in winning it.

You can see how different it was only 100 years ago. This must have been a most happy day when the war ended.

World War One was so unique in many ways.

Typical dumbass Aussies trying to carve their names into a metal tree....

The Gallipoli campaign proved to the world that Aussies made some of the best bullet stoppers in the British Empire. Unless of course if you shot them in the head...then the bullets just bounced off....

I have all the respect in the world for those men, the government at the time not so much, as in the second war where Japan was right there at their door.
