These stunning images document the everyday lives of the men, women and children of the Mentawai tribe, an indigenous people in Indonesia that has managed to keep their traditional ways, far from modern society.

The Mentawai people, a native population in Indonesia, are famous for their decorative tattoos and for living a semi-nomadic life on the Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra.

Shot by professional photographer Mohammed Saleh Bin Dollah, the series captures a glimpse of life on the island, where the tribe clan is everything and any problem can be solved by a medicine man.

The 42-year-old photographer from Kelantan, Malaysia, visited the tribe to document their way of life.

He said: 'They all live completely in land and secluded from the modern world.

'The woman walk around with no clothes on and their lives depend entirely on natural resources. I wanted to go to the island to showcase the everyday lives of the tribe.'

The tribe consists of around 64,000 people, living in homes which are known as Umas and built using bamboo, wood and grass, and are furnished with the skulls of hunted prey.

The Mentawaian's social life revolves around their clans, and at the centre is the communal long house. The clans vary in size between 30 to 80 members.

It is claimed that the tribe members believe that all living objects including plants are supposed to have spirits.

The only specialist in the community is the medicine man that is responsible for communication with the spirits and the souls - in case of misfortune or illness, he is called in to restore harmony within the group.

Professional snapper Mohammed was fortunate enough to spend some time with the Mentawai Warriors during the month of July 2014.

'I was very lucky to receive the opportunity to take these photos when I was helping out a friend who actually one lived with the Mentawai people for a period of time,' he said.

'Most of the men in the tribe are regarded as heroes, everyone on the island is very happy.

'They love it when people from the outside world come to visit because they like to show their way of living and their island.'

A cool looking people, always enjoyed looking at stuff like that.
There was an ancient empire out there, built great trading systems, and controlled most of the Indonesian areas. They traded with China, India, and whomever .

It looks like China isn't going to be able to steal the entire South China Sea without a fight.

Indonesia to Deploy Missile System on South China Sea Island

In the latest sign of ongoing hostilities in the South China Sea, Indonesia has announced plans to install its own air defense system in the region.

Nearly $5 trillion in trade passes annually through the highly contested region of the the South China Sea. China lays claim to most of the area, but there are conflicting claims by Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

According to meeting transcripts provided to IHS Jane, the Indonesian military is set to take steps to assert its own territorial claims.

The Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Udara, or TNI-AU) will station four special forces units, known as the Korps Pasukan Khas (PASKHAS), on Pulau Natuna Besar island in the South China Sea.

These units will be equipped with an air defense system known as the Oerlikon Skyshield. It features a 35mm multirole cannon that can fire 1,000 rounds per minute, as well as precision-guided projectiles that can take down aircraft.

While funding will only be granted for one Skyshield system at present, the military expressed an interest in acquiring more in the future.

The transcripts also reveal Jakarta’s plan to beef up its squadron at Ranai air base. Additional hangars are needed to house eight fighters that TNI-AU intends to purchase, including the Su-27, Su-30 or F-16, and a small drone fleet.

At a cost of $91 million, the upgrades will, if approved, be complete by 2019.

US Challenges China, Tests Sovereignty in South China Sea

The proposals come as the United States steps up efforts to encourage Pacific allies to play a more active role in countering China’s growth. Washington is currently engaged in Balikatan, a massive joint military exercise with the Philippines, sending a clear message to Beijing.

"Looking at the features of Balikatan – the mobile missile-launchers, the fighter planes – that is an indication that the alliance is being geared for territorial defense," said Rene de Castro, an international studies professor at the De La Salle University, according to Defense News.

The US has objected to Beijing’s construction of artificial islands on sensitive ecological habitats in the Spratly archipelago. While China maintains it has every right to build within its own territory and that its land reclamation projects are primarily meant for humanitarian purposes, the US has called it a violation of international law.

Washington has accused Beijing of attempting to establish an air defense zone in the South China Sea, but has not criticized its ally for placing its own air defense systems in the area.

Indonesia has a high number of amazing plants, animals and bugs. This parasitic plant perhaps appropriately has a huge disgusting flower that flies pollinate. Here is the largest recorded flower ever just found. https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/03/world/wo ... index.html

I watched this movie last night. This takes place shortly before the end of Dutch rule of the East Indies. I am inclined to believe that this movie is quite historically accurate and takes the viewer to a world long gone. The title is The East.

It's a shame how a lot of the so called empires took advantage of people, instead they should have left them with self rule, and peace.
Like with Alexander the great he left the people of a country to their own, and just let his followers control from the background if at all.

It’s not a surprise that The East won some awards. The best thriller for example. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1869716/awards/?ref_=tt_awd

They climb also.
They take down water buffalo also, bite them, and wait for them to get sick, and lay down then eat them.
