I'll stay were I am. No need for anything else.Mel Gibson wrote: ↑January 16th, 2020, 5:23 amJust priced some out... While I could afford a rundown fixer-upper 400 sq/ft one bed one bath Brownstone in that area, that simply wouldn't work. Any quality updated Brownstone with at least 2 beds/baths and some room in there is easily into the seven figures...
So, you'll have to make do with an average home in Olympia, and a Ham & Pineapple pizza for dinner. I'm sorry Renee, but that's the only way...
Years ago, when I was first married, I worked for a consultanting engineer. They did comercial HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical design. We provided plans and specs for clients such as architects and developers. One of our architectural clients specialized in the renovation of high end, NYC residential, multistory buildings. Some of the brownstones they renovated were absolutely gorgeous but you have to have major bucks in your bank account to own and live in one.

I know of a woman who is into the "furries" scene. She thinks she's a panda or some shit. I've also seen pictures of her dressed as a cow pouring milk all over herself....
Don't ask, that's all I'm sharing. It's.....not something you see every day...

I bet. Shitty small run down one bedroom brownstones are not cheap, so anything larger and upgraded is easily into the seven figures.Renee wrote: ↑January 16th, 2020, 12:47 pm Years ago, when I was first married, I worked for a consultanting engineer. Interesting to think that they originally housed immigrants and lower class people. Now you have to be upper class to even afford a basic one.
Know why brownstones always had a couple steps up to the main door? When they were originally built, horse & buggy was still the norm, and the horse piss & shit would run down the streets. Elevating the structure slightly kept the piss & shit from coming in your front door.

Interesting, I guess that's why most of the buildings in NYC that dating back before WWI have raised entrance ways.Mel Gibson wrote: ↑January 18th, 2020, 2:46 amI bet. I know my grandfather used to say that people who sold stuff like ice, produce and coal used to deliver with horse drawn carts right up through the 1920s.

Re: Stopped behind one of Renee's people today...
That was the only reason... Horse shit & piss. In most other areas it wouldn't have been an issue, but since New York was already a busy city in those days, it was an issue before the masses could afford a Model T car or whatever to replace their horses!
That, and garbage collection wasn't always great either... People tossed their garbage out too, onto the streets, which would eventually run down the roads with the next rain...
It was a dirty, dirty time... In the country it wasn't an issue, but in a place like New York you elevated your Brownstone, or else!

Re: Stopped behind one of Renee's people today...
We have to remember, that even in New York City, many people owned horses before the advent of the affordable motor car. People didn't like to walk then, just as they don't like to walk now.
Contrary to the movies, where only the wealthy would ride around in a horse & buggy, many families owned a horse for transportation purposes, even living in New York...
And if your horse died? Protocol at the time would be to just leave it there, and go buy a new one... The streets were filled with dead horses there.

Well that's where "Dead Horse Bay" on the southern tip of Brooklyn gets it's name from. In the 19th century the city used to send the dead horses and trash from the fish and meat markets there to be made into glue and fertilizer.Mel Gibson wrote: ↑January 21st, 2020, 5:44 am We have to remember, that even in New York City, many people owned horses before the advent of the affordable motor car.
