Let's talk about slingshots!

I haven't played around with a slingshot since I was a youngster, so was just browsing around online to see what's new, if anything... What surprised me was how restricted these things have become in many places, and I didn't even realize it.
Canada doesn't have any restrictions on slingshots, but what surprised me was this:
In Renee's New Jersey, it is a felony offense to possess any type of slingshot in public.
You know those slingshots with a wrist brace? Illegal in:
Massachusetts
New York
Rhode Island
Duluth, Minnesota
Louis, Missouri
Columbus, Ohio
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Charleston, South Carolina
Knoxville & Johnson City, Tennessee
Salt Lake County, Utah
Falls Church, Virginia
Madison, Wisconsin
Australia? Illegal in about half of the States/Territories.
Europe? Totally banned in Holland, Denmark, and Norway. No wrist brace styles allowed in Germany. France and Finland: Possibly restricted there also.
All styles still permitted (surprisingly) in the UK, but many there apparently want them banned also, and are petitioning to do so.
So what the hell is happening here? From what was once considered essentially a child's toy, or something for the hobbyist, to an item that is banned in more places than I ever thought would be?
