I bet the older generations are weary of Halloween due to it being perceived as an 'American influence'!

But ya, it's a very popular day in Canada and the US, especially for the kids. A tradition that the Irish/Scot's brought over with them when they came here.

Really, I thought you would have had it a long time before this was a country.
It's a lot of fun as a kid, and a lot of grownups enjoy it also with parties, and stuff.
Been to a few parties in my life, and they where more fun than Christmas in my opinion.

It's pretty much just a UK thing there. It really doesn't mean much to the rest of Europe.

You're lucky.

Here, right now, there's Halloween shit, thxgiving shit AND Xmas shit everywhere.

The commercialism of it all has really turned me off over the years. All of it is garbage.

Nothing is forcing you to participate in any of these things if you don't want to though.

We have all hallows day which is for remembering the saints, martys and the dead.

6th of November this year.

But there is no pumpkins, costumes, trick or treating or skeletons on the yard. :teehe:
People go to the cemetery to light candles.

We have trick or treating during easter.

Things are more traditional in here.

Most people only get the christmas tree, put some apples and other decorations on it and thats it.

There is no sea of lights and santa claus statues. :teehe:

Traditions do change over time though. I still remember my Grandmother using pic below to light up the Christmas tree, because German tradition, but it's quite apparent that live candles clipped onto a tree inside your living room may not be the best thing! She eventually caved and just strung lights around the tree like everyone else!

I have those but I prefer to use the electric candles.

The tree is nothing fancy.

Kinda like the christmas trees you see in old WW2 pictures.

Americans go too far with decorations.

Their houses look like Santa Claus took a giant shit on them.

It's a different mindset here. I live on a dead end rural road that nobody travels down unless they live here, and my one neighbour decks his house right out at Christmas. I actually asked him and his wife why they go through so much trouble decorating, considering where we live, and their answer was that they don't do it for anyone else, but they in fact just do it for themselves. She was quite straight forward with that fact.

They like to do it, simply because they can! I know Euro culture is different, less 'flashy', and that's not a bad thing. But here? Flash gets you admired!

It's not a bad thing, just different than some other cultures. Basically we do it because we can I suppose, and not entirely different from many here driving pickup trucks that are probably larger in size than we really need.

Basically the same thing, we just bastardized it with some native, and Mexican day of the dead stuff, and a lot of commercialism.
It was a lot of fun as a kid here, but a lot dangerous now.
When I was a kid there was an occasional razor blade in apples, or a hit of acid in the candy, not common though.

I don't remember the Christmas pickle, so that's one thing we didn't do! That may be purely a German American thing.

I do know we always celebrated on Christmas Eve, and didn't actually do much on Christmas Day though...

I guess the Christmas pickle is a thing they didn't want to bring over
There is Krampus, I wish that was a thing here :spit: the Germans could have made it a bit more lively for the bad kids here.

Halloween (Samhain) is a Celtic thing. It's the second most important Sabbat, Beltane being the first.

I would happily play the part of Krampus, and beat the grownups for not raising their kids right.
You can blame the kids of course, but most the time it's parenting.
There is always a rotten apple on the tree though, stuff it in a bag, beat it, and toss it in the river.
