World War 1 The Great War

Post: # 32522Unread post Gary Oak »

I don't believe that those who experienced WW1 the so called Great War though that it was all that great being there. I suspect that Hollywood seldom has made any WW1 movies as the military doesn't want war to be portrayed as being so horrible

Hey I had that to post saved from this morning :) great photos.
No the movies don't come close even the old ones I have noticed, but you see the damage, and then read the accounts you know better.
Those poor men, and some woman went through hell, and then some. What horror they endured all over.

This is one not many here in the States know about that was a slaughterhouse
They kept fighting over, and over, the place was demolished, and so many died for nothing.

I am reading this fascinating book. There are a lot of details that you don't get in videos however by watching scenes you get details that can't get from books as well of course. I am enjoying this read and recommend this book. The soldiers used to have army rum and many were plastered when they went over the top, most were at least tipsy.

The Canadians were recent descendence of the pioneers and thus had a culture of self reliance that is quickly dwindling is seems to me. Look at those trenches, they were overrun withh lice and rats. The rats gorging on the smorgasboard of corpses. Living in muddy trenches and sleeping in holes in the side was easier for the Canadians who grew up roughing it in the wilderness. This winter was the coldest in 50 years however it was likely a warm winter for most Canadians and especially the northern and prairie Canucks

The stupid war, all the leaders needed shot for letting people be slaughtered like that.

The USA and Canada were classless societies. This actually was a superiority of ours as it is explained in this video and more thoroughly in the best seller Vimy by Pierre Berton.

At least the Canadian leaders could use their brains

At 7:23 into the video and interesting quote is made, an observation by a very intelligent and educated officer. He noticed that though the artillary did the most killing they were not bombarding each other. I do believe he may have solved this mystery. I have read that WW1 was meant to weaken the colonial powers. I have also read and heard that folks a hundred years ago knew about stuff like this and even in school things like Jesuit involvement in Abraham Lincolns assassination were taught.

You can really see that these soldiers on both sides were very decent folk. They weren't crackheads who would steal from their best friends

If you have a couple hours to spare you might enjoy watching this Canadian movie. It does bring you back to that era quite nicely. I did enjoy this movie

The Canadians Are Red Indians And They Will Scalp You

Post: # 64270Unread post Gary Oak »

I just read this morning that on Vimy Ridge the Germans were told not to surrender as the Canadians were red indians and they would scalp them.

Some did take scalps I have read, and kept them to take home.

It's funny that the indians got known for scalping, but the Brits, and George Washington put bounties on Indians, and a scalp was proof of a kill.
