Sad people need to travel like that, and deal with bad people, so many vanish, and or made slaves.
I remember in the 70s, and 80s so many would be found dead in the water, in cargo containers, and a few shiploads of them.
We need borders, and laws for travelers, but also a new way to keep people from wanting to migrate, or stay.
Maybe make life better in the bad countries people want to get out of, less racism, and hate for someone different.

Who do we blame though, I think our own is who, useful idiots like in the photo in that link, and politicians.
We should welcome in people in real danger, but not open the floodgates.

Chinese nationals to be deported over role in cannabis grow house

Two illegal Chinese immigrants will be deported after being sentenced for growing a secret drug crop in a Canberra home.

The ACT Supreme Court heard 45-year-old Zhezhu Quan and 51-year-old Aifeng Zhang were recruited in Sydney by a criminal group to run a cannabis grow house in the Canberra suburb of Flynn.

When police raided the property in April, they found a sliding door in the back of a wardrobe, which revealed secret rooms set up to grow almost 400 plants.

Crown prosecutor Mark Fernandez told the court the set up was "a very sophisticated and ongoing enterprise", but said that both Quan and Zhang had come from poor and uneducated backgrounds in China.

"We wouldn't expect they were skilled enough to organise the set up, nor know what to do with the end product," Mr Fernandez said.

"(They were) isolated by language and culture, and vulnerable... to exploitation."

The pair watered the cannabis crop, tended to the plants and moved the pots around so they each received enough artificial light.

The court heard Quan did the majority of the work.

A property raided at the same time in Evatt found a similar set up cared for by another Chinese couple.

The court heard the two properties were linked and police have now arrested another man believed to be involved.

In sentencing, ACT Supreme Court Chief Justice Helen Murrell said she accepted Quan and Zhang were taken advantage of, and only earned enough money to sustain themselves.

"Perhaps desperate people... certainly not the masterminds behind the enterprise," the Chief Justice said.

Both have been held in custody since they were arrested in April.

Zhang will be released later this week into the custody of immigration officials.

Quan was sentenced to a longer period of two years and three months in jail.

He will also be deported upon release.

The Vancouver Port Authority ignored warnings about the Chinese business interests it was wooing in the 1990s -- allowing a number of questionable business connections to take root in the port, The Province has learned. In the mid-'90s, as courting efforts aimed at Chinese shipping giant Cosco went into overdrive, intelligence officials -- including local ports police -- sounded alarm bells about the conglomerate's questionable connections. The shipping line is intimately linked to the China International Trust and Investment Corp., a key fundraiser for the Chinese government and a technology-acquiring source for China's military.
U.S. Senate investigators and Canadian intelligence officials have described Cosco as the merchant marine of the Chinese military.
Its vessels have been caught carrying thousands of weapons into California and Chinese missile-technology and biological-warfare components into North Korea, Pakistan, Iraq and Iran, according to U.S. intelligence reports. Last summer -- two years after the ports police were disbanded -- the port signed a deal with Cosco to make Vancouver its gateway to North America. Cosco had chosen the only major port on the West Coast of North America without a dedicated police force.
Port officials maintain they have no evidence Cosco is directly involved in any illegal activity and cannot recall receiving police warnings. Cosco officials have declined interviews.
Police and immigration documents obtained by The Province show that, in the early '90s, Chinese mafia members or triads were attempting to infiltrate port operations.
In one case, a man identified as Chan Chung Hiu applied for a visitor visa at the Canadian consulate in Hong Kong to come to Vancouver on Jan. 14, 1992. Chan said he was an advisor to a company that had concluded a deal with the B.C. government to take over operations at one of the docks.
Background checks conducted found that Chan was a member of the notorious Sun Yee On triad and had served a four-year jail term for armed robbery in Hong Kong.
Chan abandoned the application after being asked to produce a police certificate. In another case, members of the same triad group, who are among the world's biggest heroin traffickers, were seen entertaining a senior officer of the now defunct Co-Ordinated Law Enforcement Unit. The party aboard a yacht was hosted by a Vancouver-based shipping company suspected of having links with the Chinese mafia.
