Gas less expensive in Point Roberts USA

Post: # 43865Unread post Superchecker »

Hello!
Woke up to gas selling in South Delta at $146.2 a litre CAD... Ventured across the line to Point Roberts where 2 gas stations were showing $108.9 a litre (USD) and 2 more were showing $117.9 a litre USD...

I figure that I must have saved about $15 on a tank of gas, and then used that $15 to save another $5 on a 6 pak of beer!!

Border waits were about 15 minutes each way, on a Thursday morning...

I don't blame you for the drive Super, and I bet that Canada is loosing a lot of money that way because they are gouging the citizens with taxes, and other stuff.
Here I drive 7 miles to get my gas, it's cheaper, and not the reformulated stuff that is wasteful, and a con on the public.
The reformulated as here cost more, and also you get less gas mileage from it. I wonder how they think that's helping the environment.
Of course I talk to myself. Sometimes I need expert advise, and a good conversation.

Superchecker what do you tell them at the border when going in? I have only gone to Point Roberts twice to pick up packages. Just tell them straight up that I'm going there for their gas? It's such a small town that I can't tell them that I'm going there for shopping. I think it cost at least $12+ of fuel to drive down there and back from mid town Vancouver.

I tell them that I'm going in for gas. The US border guards don't react at all and when I come back into Canada, they just wave me through if that's all I bought.

I tell them straight up, going to the gas station or the grocery store...

I always declare everything I buy when down there, and have only had to pay duties once...

55 litre fill up, saving approx 28 cents a litre= $15.40 in savings approx...
Then, hit the grocery store and pick up a 6 pack of beer for under $10 ($15 Up here!)
Some buy milk or eggs...

Years ago, there was pop and junk food that you couldn't buy up here, that we always stocked up on....

I don't go down all that often... Like once a season really.... Some go weekly! Some take the time to get the Nexus pass to speed things up both ways....

If you do go, I strongly suggest avoiding the much busier weekends...

Maybe make a day of it! Point Roberts has a State park & beach, Lighthouse park.... South west corner of the point... There area few places to eat at, or hit the grocery store down there and picnic on the beach?

Head thru the main border and have a whole day down in Bellingham (Bellis Fair), or driver further south to the Outlet Mall near exit 200/201...

If you happen to stay down over 48 hours, I think you can bring back $400 (or is it $800 now?) duty free, as well as a bottle of booze/case of beer & smokes...

If traffic is backed up coming home, hit the duty free store to by pass half the line up!

You don't have to gamble a cent, but there are numerous casinos close to the main Hwy I-5, and many have great buffets and inexpensive restaurants... Skagit Casino is exit 236 I believe, and the weekday lunch buffet comes in at like $8!!!... The Friday & Saturday SEAFOOD Buffet is like $17 or so... Save 10-15% with a free players card...

Tulalip Resort is next to the Outlet Mall in Marysville, exit 201 or 200... Olive Garden located near the outlet mall, or 4 or 5 different dining options in the Resort....

I love grocery stores in the states. They sell so many things we don't have! I don't usually buy prepared foods, but some things you just HAVE to try.

2 or 3 times a year we hit Fred Meyers.... It's roughly an hour from there to get home- depending on the border waits...

My father n law eats quite a few frozen dinners, and there is alot more choice down there...
Cheese is cheaper... Bread... Beer...

A buddy of mine loves canned bread, and he ventures down every other month to stock up....
