It's a milder taste than maple, but good :)
I had that, and I forget a few others I tried one time in school. Before that I didn't even know they used more than the old maple.

Manitoba Maple Syrup ?

Post: # 75720Unread post Gary Oak »

I have contemplated trying my hand at making birch and maple syrup. I actually am going to gorge on pancakes soaked in maple syrup when I get off of the internet in a few minutes. Some farmers in Manitoba are going to try making maple syrop ? I would imagine then that other farmers in Saskatchewan and Alberta might want to give this a try too.

Manitoba maple syrup is oh so sweet

Fresh syrup is so good, and when I was a kid we would get the big containers of it some less than a month old.
If I had the trees, and climate for it I would be getting it.

It sounds good, I would like some now please :)

How about some Hickory Syrup, it's less sweet, and even more woodsy

Hickory syrup I had years ago, it was not real sweet, and the wood taste was more.
I thought it was pretty good at the time, and would try it again.
I never had birch syrup, it sounds a bit lighter, and sweet to my thinking.

I looked on Amazon last night, I might buy some soon to see how they both taste. :)

I wonder if the type of tree counts, we have water maples all over the place here, I hate the things.
The few sugar maples we have is nice trees, and the occasional mountain maple might be good.

Never had birch or hickory syrup but as kids we used to chew on birch twigs. It tasted like birch beer.

I wouldn't try water maple, especially not ours around here.
The wood stinks, and most in the neighborhood is feeding off old septic systems, and now sewer.
They are a nuisance tree in my opinion, I hate the things.
Other maples I love even if a pain with the seeds.

I wonder who got the idea to tap tree sap for sugar? Has there ever been a study of tree saps for syrups ? Perhaps you’ll make a discovery.

Likely they just tasted it from a tree that was leaking it.

They have to be fresh off the tree and it was silver birch. I don't know if white birch tastes the same.

Dry branches you find on the ground won't have much flavor

I use this brand, and have for years, but occasionally have something different.
When I was a kid we would get the military cans of syrup, just a plain can you punched a hole in with a can opener, very good stuff.
