The Tartan Dragon

Unread post by Gary Oak »

a friend of mine wrote the book The Tartan Dragon This book is a historical novel and is a fascinating read. I learned a great deal about Hong Kong's history as this book takes you through all the eras right from when Britain was first ceded Hong Kong and ends at Handover. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it.John Maclean has a history degree and a law degree as well he did three years research for this book . In short I enjoyed this book and I believe others will too.

As 1997 approaches, it seems as though more and more ink is being spilled on "historical sagas" about Hong Kong. Tartan Dragon is exceptional only in its tendency to offend at almost every turn of the page. From the opening pages, this overblown saga of three generations of Scots is utterly devoid of anything but stock phrases and racial cliches such as "John Chinaman" and "slant-eyed little beast." A straight, unembellished history of Hong Kong would be more informative and more entertaining. This book appears to be modeled on James Clavell's Noble House, but even for those who enjoy such sagas, this one will seem tedious, flatly written and insulting.

A book review that knocks the book it's reviewing.

Soon Gary Oak will be talking of "the oath".

I don't think he's trying to make any forum look bad. I think he honestly believes the crap he's trying to peddle.

Well, what's Tartan Dragon anyway though? Isn't it just a failed knockoff of Noble House, which wasn't all that great either iirc.

It's a fictional story about how westerners have been "treated badly" by Hong Kong Chinese. Gary Oak has previously written his own stories on how westerners like himself have been "treated badly" by the Chinese on DV. He's obsessed and loves making up stories.

Yes. Overthrow the Qing, restore the Ming. The oath hasn't been used in a hundred years until Gary Oak saw it on a sign at a TD Bank in Chinatown, apparently.

I wonder if The Tartan Dragon is still valued at a whopping .02 cents per copy or if it has plummeted from
from that lofty and over-valued vantage.

Why bring this crap up again? It is still just as big a waste of time as before. Posting the same junk on a different forum only points to the desperation of the loser Gary Oak.
