Thing is you would need to check with the scrap companies and see if you get true scrap value. While they are discontinuing the penny it is illegal to melt them down. It is still legal tender.

But if it's still legal tender (and I agree with you that it is) then why are the banks not obligated to accept it?

Contact the mint. If they are still legal tender you would think the banks cannot refuse them.

Check into the laws. You are right they should not be able to refuse them. Check with a coin dealer if you think there are some older coins that may have worth and maybe they will give you face value for them.

The Original Canadian Large Cent is perhaps one of the most beautiful coins ever minted.

They were commonly used as pendants at one time:

if you can find them in nice condition they can be quite valuable.

Well-I'd like to start a penny collection of the old vintage dates.

Y'know what they say, what is one man's/woman's trash is another's treasure. ;)

No coin counters in our area either. There is one in a town nearby-ish....but they take 10%.
Call me a cheapskate....but I'm not giving some machine three hundred bucks to count coins I have already counted and rolled.

Old Canadian coins were quite beautiful, imho.

Far superior in quality to American, even tho the latter are appraised at much more.

Canadian coins stand for quality, and relatively speaking counterfeiting is rare.

You can always expect quality with a Canadian coin.

Until you have a suitcase full. Then they are just space sucking deadweight.
All potentially valuable coins and coins of a certain vintage have been removed before rolling. The rest....I just want out of here. Nickels, dimes, quarters...loonie and toonies....what to do. It's a ridiculous situation.

well mimi, this website says you can still redeem the pennies:

http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/about-the ... rs-6900004
Where can I bring my pennies for redemption?

Canadians may redeem their pennies at their financial institution. Financial institutions may require that pennies be properly rolled. Canadians may also consider donating them to charities.

Are financial institutions required to accept my pennies?

Canadians can continue to deposit pennies at their financial institution. Some financial institutions may require large amounts of pennies to be rolled or wrapped for deposit. Canadians should consult their financial institution in advance to determine how best to make deposits.

Yes...thank you, Joe. I know that's what they SAY....but if you go to a bank...at least in my area...they don't want anything to do with them. That's the whole point of the thread.

geez, this is like every other 'ask for help' thread you ever started mimi

You go on and on, seeking answers from us, never taking the advice, then you go on an on some more seeking the answers from people who've already found the solution but either you don't admit it, or else you cant grasp what many others already knew all along.

oh well, such is life.

some people in this world either know or find the answers right away, but others search and search and search and never find the answers which are starin' at 'em in the face,eh?

Posting pictures of pennies isn't an answer, Joe. I KNOW what they look like. WHERE CAN YOU TAKE THEM ? THAT IS THE QUESTION. WHAT IS YOUR ANSWER ? .

Make them into a nice pendant ? Frame a nice pic of what a penny used to buy ?
Your 'advice' doesn't answer my question.
