Part of the confusion (on this side) may come from the fact that, when people say "America," they're usually referring to the United States of America, to the country and not to any continent.

On the other hand, the plural term, "the Americas," refers to both American land masses, north and south, with Central America and the Carribean countries considered to be part of the North American land mass.

Actually there is another theory as to how the name "America" was derived. We were told in school that it was named after Amerigo Vespucci, the map maker. The Vikings, who had settlements in the New World, used the suffix "rika" to mean a country. The German word reich, meaning a sovereign state, derives from the same Teutonic root as "rika."

England was Ang-Rika, France was Fran-Rika. Iran was Pars-Rika while India was Hind-Rika. Now in the ancient Norse tongue Omme (pronounced UMM-AY ) meant farthest or remotest. Since Vinland or Newfoundland was the remotest place, the Vikings named the New World Omme-Rika.
