Is Uber picky about the car you use if you work for them?

Unread post by 9 incher/160 IQ »

I would have no problem as my VW is new, but I was thinking about my forum friend Joe.

He mentioned he has a very old car with motor problems. He is an ex cab driver or limo driver. It might be a way supplement his disability cheques so he doesn't need roommates any more.

How does it feel being so poor as an old man, Joe?

Go for it, Eddy.

Be the next sucker on the block to subsidize Uber and pay their shareholders.

It'd be the equivalent of going to work for London Drugs/Shopper's Drug Mart and then having to buy your own cash register, and when it broke down or needed servicing, you pay the entire costs of fixing it out of your own pocket. And then it comes directly out of your paycheque since you foot the entire bill.

By the time you pay for gas, insurance, repairs, there aint much coin left fer you.

But go ahead....do it!

Does he get you free xannx prescriptions?

Or does the government pay for it, Eddy?

If an uber or a taxi smells like ass, I'll hop right the fuck out. If my hand sticks to the upholstery, ditto.
Worst cab ride ever in my North American Experience was in Philadelphia. It was literally 100 degrees (f) and the cab had a broken ac. The Somali driving it was chewing betel nut, and the ride from Temple University to 30th St. Station seemed to take forever. I'd have jumped ship but the neighborhood was so sketchy I sucked it up.

I took transit in Phoenix once. I didn't have to, I just wanted to experience it.

I sat down behind a huge black guy. Holy shit. It smelled like death. You could see the sweat salt stains all over his tshirt and hat. It was unbearable. It was over a hundred degrees out. Only time I ever took a bus there. The condo is along the light rail track so I have been catching it to and from the condo before covid. You can at least stand up and away from people on the light rail most of the time.

I took uber before covid. Good experience. They're more professional than taxis, from the few rides I've taken to compare. The ubers were cleaner than taxis, you can see where the vehicle is located.

Anyone who supplies their wn vehicle, and ends up paying for the insurance and gas out of their own pocket is fucking dumb.

Especially for a measely $20 per hour.

If I were to enter into such an arrangment, I'd want at least $50, more like 100 per hour just because the costs and overhead of insuring and maintaing a vehicle for driving passengers is prohibilitively expensive.

Modern cars cost a mint to run and maintain.

Absolutely don't drive for them. There are tips also Joe. Were you factoring that in? When covid's done you could consider driving a tour bus. Base pay is $20 something, tips on top, you just have to have class 2 which the company will provide. Casual work if you want.

The Uber cab Cap. Harris was describing above would be a step-up from your 1991 Ford Escort, wouldn't you say? :(

...but the driver still has to supply their own car.

That's minimum $10,000-15,000 for a used car.

Probably $20-25,000 for a better USED car.

At least $30,000 for a brand new car.

Probably more like $40,000.

A new 2021 Lincoln Continental costs $60,000.

And since you don't work, Eddy, you have no idea a driver has to work and how many rides heshe has to take in order to pay off the inintial investment (the car) just to break even.

As I said before, it's like having to go to a job as a retail sales clerk/cashier and having to supply your own cash register or go to work as a barrista for Starbucks and buy a $10-20,000 Coffee machine as a condition of working for them.

Would that be a good deal for a person who's making $15 an hour?

No of course not.

But that's the business model a typical Uber/Lyft driver has to contend with.

They end up subsidizing these ride sharing companies.

Good deal for them. However, Shitty deal for the driver.

Yeah, my car is about that old, GranpaP.

Amazingly, it still runs.

One thing I've discovered about those oldere cars - they're a lot cheaper to maintain than the new ones.

A new car part can cost you - and I'm not kidding - 100 times more than 1 measley part from an older car.

It's cuz now, everything is computerized.

I saw that a part for a flex hose on some of these newer cars is $400!

But on an old car it can be had for as little as $4.

All because of some built in computer chip as opposed to the old stuff where the digital technology was minimal.

There's no advantage in buyng these new cars if you don't have to.
