...and in old age, she was still quite stunning...

Maria Lopukhina by Vladimir Lukich Borovikovsky
A Fatal Beauty

[Maria Lopukhina] was one of the noble Tolstoy family. Born Countess Maria Ivanovna Tolstaya in 1779.

[Maria Lopukhina] was the eldest daughter of Count Ivan Andreevich Tolstoy - a major-general in the army - and Anna Fedorovna Maikova. She had three brothers (Fyodor, Peter, Yanuary) and three sisters (Vera, Anna and Ekaterina), though Anna died in childhood.

She was the first cousin once removed of the great novelist Leo Tolstoy. Her father's younger brother, Ilya Andreevich Tolstoy, was Leo Tolstoy's grandfather.

Despite their high rank, the Tolstoys were at that time relatively poor, the result of a conflict with the authorities earlier in the eighteenth century. The family estate was in Kologriv in Kostromskaya oblast, near Yaroslavl on the Volga.

Maria's elder brother was Fyodor Tolstoy, who later went on to become a famous adventurer who sailed round the world, as well as a notorious duelist, gambler and friend of Pushkin. He was nicknamed "the American" because he sailed to Alaska.

In 1797 Maria married Stepan Andreevich Lopukhin, the chief huntsman and in practice the chamberlain in the court of Tsar Paul I.

The portrait was commissioned by Maria's husband on the occasion of the marriage. She was 18 at the time.

Just six years after the portrait was painted, in 1803, Maria died from tuberculosis. :(
