...on the side of a pot 3000 years ago.

Spin the pot and the pictures on it moved.

Eadweard Muybridge's photographic motion studies were the first of its kind. Muybridge photographed human and animal subjects over specific time intervals to record their movements. Among others, he photographed, birds, horses, people to determine how they moved. Muybridge's work was widely thought to have been the percusor to modern animation as it demonstrated the a series of still photos could be assembled to produce an illusion of figures in motion.
