Sure Glad I've got air conditioning in the apartment.

Unread post by J0E »

...Over 10 years ago, I bought this air conditioner from Home Hardware on sale for just $89.00.

$100 including tax.

In retrospect it was an extremely good buy.

It's been cooling down the place during this heatwave.

I understand it was over 30 C or 90 F yesterday.

Sometimes one can look back and be glad about the decisions they made.

Hindsight often is 20/20.

Maybe Australians just have thicker hides.

I notice they're able to thrive in any climate.

Extreme Heat, Extreme Rain or Extreme Cold.

And it doesn't seem to bother any of them.

For some people, 30C is an air conditioned room...

I'm using an air purifier. It puts out cool air, so that's a bonus feature.

Ya. It's not icy like an air conditioner, but it cools.

I grew up and spent most my adult life in Montreal, a city of wild temperature extremes.

Summer: around 2 months of 32 to 42 C, with 100% humidity (many deaths every year)

Winter: around 3 months of -30 to -40 C (many deaths every year)

Plus, the beautiful trips to India... last time I was there, I was there for fourteen days. On eleven of those fourteen days, the mercury hit between 52 and 55 C... in the shade. People spent their noontimes in their cars when they didn't have AC at home (which the majority don't).

I kept telling them, "but it's a dry heat!" :D

Please yourself, the heat seemed pretty moist when I was out that way. You want a dry head, try hitting the Pilbara region in North Western Australia sometime during their summer. Their 50C is more tolerable than the 35-38 I encountered while in the Ottawa valley.

Similarly, at the other end of the scale I used to freeze my tits off in temperatures of 3-5 centigrade if I didn't rug up before heading outside. Ottawa though... I could stand on the front porch of my place in a pair of jeans and a teeshirt in December and regularly did on overcast days when the ambient temperature and humidity made for a pleasant minus 5 to minus 10

It needs its girlfolk to stop chasing the adults about. The fuck do they think they are, Connecticutt? They want to watch themselves, or by the time they hit 20 their beef curtains will be beating them to death every time a cyclone comes through.

Old and outdated technology. Mini splits are the way to go for cooling.

Depends on the climate and budget. Mounted evaporative cooling systems have their place.

Not here. I’ve never seen one. Mini splits are relatively cheap. Every Asian country in the universe makes them.

Naw, they're just hepa filters. There are two sets of filters. They're just basic - they catch particles in the air. A side bug/feature is that by pushing air through it acts as a fan. Dyson sells an air cleaner that advertises the air cooling property as if it was done on purpose. The one I bought is cheaper. I'm happy to find that it incidentally cools the air. I don't worry about being hot. We don't get high heat here - maybe it was approaching 30 C today, I haven't checked.

I have been running the A/C 24/7 at the new vacation home. Makes a world of difference. It has been in the high 30's here.

I have 2 air conditioners....one upstairs and one downstairs (I don't have one on the bottom 3rd floor...no need)...they work well. I'm going to be buying another bigger one in the fall when they aren't so popular and jack up the prices. Just to better prepare for next year.
