I don't mind Commercial Drive in Van, but knowing what I now know, if I had one day to spend in Van, I would hang aroound Kits, Granville Island and Yaletown.
I have not visited much of the world, but my suggestion would be center of some old euro city. They typically have medieval core and that would be what I would recommend. With a fine print to avoid Molenbeek-like areas. A'dam, Bruges, Prague, Warsaw, .... these cities have areas worth hanging around

In NYC I like Madison Avenue on the upper east side.....It makes me feel cosmopolitan but not too exotic. Great window shopping for flaneurs......people watching there is like a casting call.

Spanish steps neighborhood in Roma out of summer tourist season when it's evocative of the amazing Mr. Ripley era.

Next time you go there, enjoy cannoli in Barcaccia

That (tiny and busy) place has not so stellar reviews online, it is considered tourist trap. While I ackowledge that, and pretty much everything around the Steps, Fountain di Trevi and Pantheon is likely to be a trap, I still after several years remember that I enjoyed cannoli there. Perhaps the setting, upbeat feeling, holding hands with mylady and watching kids enjoy gelato... And I generally have low expectations in life. Which is a huge blessing...

Best street in Van ... Denman? It's so nice and underrated. Granville's great too, especially in the upper streets (South of the bridge).

My guess will be Commercial drive or Robson St..

Good that Commercial Drive was maintained and not turned into a freeway.
