Ludwig Van Beethoven composed a number of pieces for the Mandolin during his lifetime.

These somewhat carefree and happy melodies were quite unlike the majority of his works, which have a somewhat grave and serious tone that may have had something to do with his loss of hearing in his later years.

Here's the Sonatina in C Major, for the Mandolin & Harpsichord,

I've always liked this violin solo -nearly all 16th notes--prelude in E major
