Hi Cap,

Krewe of Cork.
Tuneup for the first and rather tentative Mardi Gras after Katrina.

Interesting time to be there.
Love the city dearly, like a blowsy old aunt with too much perfume and waterbed cleavage.

We had the hotel booked long before the storm. The French Quarter or the " Sliver by the River" as they called it was in pretty good shape, I guess being the oldest part the high ground was settled first. The rest was pummelled horribly. One streetcar was limping along a 3 block route on St. Charles St. orchestrated by the chamber of commerce and the middle ground grass was 4' high.
Walking any distance was a no shit, post apocalyptic experience.

Thought we would stay North American after going to Thailand the year before, right after the tsunami. Again, booked 6 months ahead of time.
In subsequent years we had to do a mailout to our friends once we booked a vacation so they could get their relatives out. We had a couple of local vacations after that and did not travel far until 2010 when Westjet ended up putting us up in a spit and sawdust bar in St John's to watch Igor bounce trash cans off our windows.

So it goes.

Everything went for a shit when Katrina hit and and they were still asking for donations on TV.
My good wife ( a warranted distinction ) said should we send some money down.
I felt we should take some money down.
Innkeeper said if we had a tolerance for third world conditions and a sense of humour they could use us.
One of the best trips ever.
In a lot of the shops we popped into we were the first out of towners they had seen since the floods.
About half said they were just putting on a fresh pot of coffee if we would like to stay for it and chat.
We felt like the first green shoot on a tree charred by lightning. Good folks just looking for some kind of sign things could get back to normal. Had to pick up a little somethin at each shop.
Came home with a duffle bag of crap.

Our frostback compadres were very well represented and highly regarded at the time.
While Brownie was still doin a hell of job, a squadron of electrical linesmen from Quebec & Ontario had jumped in their bucket trucks, driven down and rolled up their sleeves. Over and over we heard how the first help some folks received was from a truck with Canuck plates.

A real eyeopener, and the game changing takeaway for me was just how thin the veneer of civilization is and how quickly it can evaporate, even in the richest nation on earth.
I don't know for sure if it would have been any better if they had voted differently but I suspect that might have been the case.

We went to Viet Nam last October without incident.
I don't know if the jinx is broken or god just felt they had already taken their lumps.

We went this past October to New Orleans and the people there are amazing. We plan to go back... but in cooler conditions. I think Bourbon Street will be less pungent. :dunno2:

Kotori- the entire French Quarter has a stench like what I imagine Medieval Paris smelled like - humid rot, garbage, vomit, piss, and stale beer, all mixed with the charms of the tidal muddy Mississippi.

totally exhilirating.

Anyone planning to kiss the soft underbelly of the Big Easy should read "A confederacy of dunces:, as it does much to explain NOLA.

Smellovision is part of the experience.
Bourbon street smells exactly the way it should.
Fortunately it's only a small part of the experience.

A couple of more shots from the same trip.

I am just trying to figuring out posting photos from my SlickPic account to the forum.
Does anyone know if there is a better way to get an album on the forum.
This was using the addy into URL brackets.
It would be just spiffy if there was a way for it to auto open.

Thanks
Link Edited

Thanks Evs,
Looks like the URL button is the way to go.

I don't know how you keep on top of software changes.
Photo software and interfaces age in dog years .
I usually just figure something out a week before it's orphaned or mothballed.

Thanks evs,
I was using the URL Slickpic generated, but apparently that just went to the album cover.
I see the URL in the browser window drills down.
Much appreciated.
