The BUS PLUNGE thread.

Unread post by GranpaP »

The bus plunge story was a tragic type of space filler from a time when the typesetting of a daily wasn't so simple. They all but disappeared when digital methods made typesetting more exacting and predictable.

They're real stories -- buses plummeting off cliffs are surprisingly common, even today.

http://themasticator.blogspot.ca/2006/1 ... genre.html

Bus plunge stories are a nickname for a journalistic practice of reporting bus mishaps in short articles that describe the vehicle as "plunging" from a bridge or hillside road.

Would "diving" be a more acceptable word?

Spoofy.

It's easy to judge because it's so hard to understand.

"Plunge" is the word journalist use and it sounds funny enough for the purpose of this topic.

I saw compilation of these bus plunges years ago in a National Lampoon magazine.

I intend to keep track... a scorecard if you will (as in the Ramadan thread) of how many praying pilgrims die from going back and forth to mosques, churches, etc.

Guizhou bus plunge kills 24

The death toll from a bus crash in southwest China's Guizhou Province on Tuesday has risen to 24 after rescuers recovered two more bodies. A seriously-injured passenger also died in hospital, local police said on Thursday.

The bus carrying 37 people veered off a provincial highway in Renhuai City and plunged 58 meters into the Chishui River at around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Renhuai City Public Security Bureau.

Bus driver Xiao Qianzhong and two children were among the dead. The investigation revealed the bus, approved to carry 35 people, had 37 aboard when the crash happened.

The 13 injured, including three listed in serious condition, are being treated in local hospitals.

The bureau said no one was missing in the accident. The search and rescue operation ended on Wednesday.

Survivor Hu Jun, who is being treated in Renhua City People's Hospital, said most of the bus was submerged in water less than 30 seconds after the crash.

Hu, who was not seriously injured, said he kept calm and managed to rescue three others and his wife.

Survivors recalled the bus was traveling very fast before the plunge.

The Guizhou provincial government has urged local governments to strengthen transport safety monitoring and speed up efforts to fortify dangerous road sections

The accident occurred around 4:10 a.m. in the La Libertad region, the official news agency Andina said, citing a police report.

I remember going through the Spences Bridge area as a youth and watching them film part of the Sweet Hereafter. An Atom Egoyan film based on a real school bus plunge. They were filming beside the road.

Seven people were still critical, they said. Police officials said negligent driving was the cause of the accident Wednesday, as the driver, who jumped off the bus just before the bus plunged into the river, was talking on his cellphone.

The 42-seater private bus carrying over 70 passengers was going to Ani town from Kullu when it fell into the river near Jhari, some 20 km from here.

I thought this thread would be about lowering ones self esteem and income enough to take the bus.

Stereotype is just another word for statistic.
